Best to all our members who will be affected by the hurricane … particularly those on Florida’s gulf coast. Hurricane force cat 3 winds and storm surges are a scary combo.

J&B

Here in middle Ga we have a flood watch and possible tropical storm force winds. But it pales in comparison.

We're safe (so far) in Pensacola, as the storm is pretty well east of us. But we're actually camping for the week in mid-Alabama, so even farther away. Will probably get som rain, though.

We got about 1.5" of badly needed rain. I wouldn't have minded 3" or more.... But thankful for what we got because we did get 1.25" earlier in the week. Just enough to get the creeks flowing again. Not even close to full, but flowing is better that bone dry like they have been for a few weeks.

Nothing but a mildly breezy night....

Again, thankful.

No issues except a delay in issuing insurance on my new boat which has caused the closing to be delayed until next week. Insurance for hurricane coverage for a boat being docked in the Florida Keys is becoming so expensive that I will most likely self-insure except for liability.

I canceled the hurricane insurance on the house in Marathon after the last storm. I have the highest lot in the area and I had no water damage in the house. The pool was filled with sand, and the fence was destroyed but the insurance only paid a small amount a year later.

Idalia passed about 100 miles west of the coast and 135 miles west of the ranch. I had no issues at the ranch or the house here in Sebring.

The hurricanes are becoming more intense and Ian caused so much damage ( 100 billion) that homeowners insurance has doubled. Some homeowners are being forced to sell and leave the state because they can not afford the insurance that is required if they have a mortgage.

Insurance is becoming a real problem here.

The realities of climate change will cost everyone money no matter where you live.

Best wishes to everyone affected by these storms.

Billy

All this reminds me of the last hurricane in Marathon. This was a pile of debris thirty feet high a block away from the house.

I cancelled mine as well.

Aside: My Fiat Spider broke down in Marathon at the 55-mile marker in the 1970s. The mechanic had no idea how to fix foreign cars, so we took a bus home, rented a tow-bar for Mrs. Notes' Jeep, hauled it back, and it turned out to be a faulty distributor cap.

Back to insurance:

I had a claim after a hurricane that destroyed my water softener, came through an air conditioner when my neighbor's limb hit it and that screwed up the linoleum tile in the back room.

The insurance paid $2,000, just enough to fix the water softener. The rate now is $4,000 per year, so I'll take my chances.

The house was built in 1950, and for the roof, instead of 2x4s, it's held up with pairs of 2x6 beams that are actually 2" by 6" of Miami-Dade Pine. Top that with real tongue and groove of the same wood and then 2" of polyurethane foam.

I have storm awnings and storm panels.

I'm 32' above sea level (The Florida Alps) so the storm surge shouldn't get me.

In the past few years, I've saved a lot of money by dropping wind insurance. Especially since after damage, the insurance companies don't want to pay. Of course I'm taking a risk.

In addition, Allstate started a new, Florida only company and transferred all their insurance to it. You can bet, if a big one comes, they will have that company declare bankruptcy.

I've been in every hurricane in FL since Donna, and I know this for most of coastal Florida:

(1) don't live on the beach or on a barrier island.

(2) don't live on what was once swamp land (if the land isn't 20'above sea level, don't buy it).

(3) don't live near a river or any other body of water subject to storm surge.

(4) buy hurricane awnings/shutters/panels, you will need them.

(5) don't buy an asphalt shingle roof. After the storm, 99.99% of the blue tarps on roofs are on this type of roof.

(6) don't live in a mobile home or manufactured house.

It's not a safety guarantee, but it diminishes the odds to the minimum.

The water does much more damage than the wind.

I've seen Ft. Meyers Beach flattened 4 times since I was a kid, and yet, they rebuild. I've seen 1/4 mile of barrier island disappear in a storm, and although they tried to rebuild it with new sand, the new sand just washed away. I've seen more oceanside homes destroyed than I can count.

Why do they keep doing the same thing? Hit me once, shame on you, hit me again, shame on me.

I feel badly for those who didn't know these rules, or chose to ignore them.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
