What is interesting is that it's said that the Beatles could neither write nor read written music. At least not initially.

Therefore, one simply has to assume that none of this was actually planned from a music theory point of view. They were "writing" the songs as they created and heard them in their heads and later, when someone who could write the sheet music and scribed it onto the written page, the creative musical genius was revealed when, to make it fit the actual music, differing time signatures were absolutely required to allow someone playing from that sheet music to recreate the song accurately.

I think they simply started with a musical idea and then as it evolved, were saying, "hey, lets do this!" and if it worked, they kept it.

Burt Bacharach did the same, but he had classical training.

It's just the way he thought the songs should be.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

That is the way music should be written in most cases. I have always told my students learn music theory but don't let it interfere with you playing. That is play from the heart. Use theory to expand your musical horizons but don't let it dictate your playing. I believe this video proves that.

It's called the Heineken Maneuver.

I didn't feel "trick"ed by the music.

It'd be lovely if BIAB could facilitate this sort of flow easily.

Cheers

Hi,

you might need to add George Martin into the equation, and I am quite sure he tought them a trick or two :-)
Also bear in mind that they were exposed to jazz (they actively listened to jazz) and indian influence (Ravi Shankar), and in the Hamburg days, they had to play live for plenty of hours every night, where they needed to play a repetoire of great variation.

They seemed like playful lads who liked musical experiments as well, and had a record company that were open to such experiments.

All my loving
Peter

Exactly.

Paul will preach to anyone who listens that, because none could read or write music, the tunes had to be ones that they could remember. Lucky for us.

For me there’s no better place in the band than to have one leg in the harmony world and the other in the percussive. Thank you Paul Tutmarc and Leo Fender.
