Hi All,
It's been a while since I posted anything here. We've been travelling quite a bit and I've been teaching in-between and what with one thing and another...well you know how it is.

Anyway, this is a strange offering which doesn't seem to fit into any particular genre, so it may not appeal to everyone. (Or anyone for that matter.) It's a metaphorical song about how we don't always make connections between actions and consequences, even though they can appear obvious to others, and how we can be oblivious to well intentioned warnings.

It was all tracked-up in Realband and is mainly just me singing and playing guitar and bass with sampled drums. There is an intermittent girl backing vocal which is an RT and a synth bass RT on the ending. For those who are interested in such things, the guitar is a Tele, the bass is a Jazz and the drums were sampled from a 1960's Premier kit (in aquamarine sparkle) with a chrome 2000 snare and 22in kick drum. The sample player was Speed-drum. As ever, I'm always grateful to anyone who is kind enough to give it a listen.

TELL THE CHILDREN
She took a wrong turn and hit the twilight zone
And Henrietta, she's not going home
She's walking down the wrong path but she don't seem to care
She's heading down a one way street that's going nowhere

Well Billy's up there and he's not coming down
He wasn't on the A-List, but he turned it all around
He's climbed the ladder and he's nearly at the top
But he hasn't seen the snake that's lurking in the grass

Lightning Pete he used to be a star
Well he could sing like an angel and he played guitar
But now he's getting older and he's lost his way
'Cause if you live in the past you can forget to live today

Sometimes you see it and sometimes you don't
But it don't make no difference 'cause it's too late to turn around
You run through the red light, it was dark on the stop sign
And a man on the radio was singing 'bout the good times
Tell the children, but they won't listen.

All the best to my old friends here.

Cool rock feel.
I don't like that boing that seems paired with the snare but apart from the intro it isn't too obvious.
Your vocal is getting caught up in the guitar riff partly due to the panning.
Not sure about metaphor but it's a good sounding thing.

Cheers

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Hi Rog,

Intriguing song and nice lyrics
Like your vocals and those of the BG.
Lot of things happen in the song.
Sometimes I thought to hear something like 'Come together' from the Beatles, but then it changes in to somethiong else.
With your vocals you do the same.
I enjoyed that a lot!

So your song is very attractive, but I agree with Ray on that metaphoric thing.
Beside that I wasn't so fond of the sound of the snare drum at the start. A bit hollow (is that the right word?).
But great stuff!

Hans

It’s always a treat to hear one from you, Rog.

Great write ... love:
"Sometimes you see it and sometimes you don't
But it don't make no difference 'cause it's too late to turn around
You run through the red light, it was dark on the stop sign
And a man on the radio was singing 'bout the good times
Tell the children, but they won't listen."

There are always hints of sounds from our favorite “British Invasion” bands melded with classic rock that bring back good memories.

Thanks for the backstory on how it all came together.

As always your performances are outstanding.

We hope you’ll stay around awhile,
J&B

I like that opening guitar riff.

What a cool rocker! Love that classic sound. Spin that vinyl.

I enjoyed this and was rocking (literally) in my seat as I listened.

Misha, Elliot, Firesong, Mario,
I really appreciate you all looking in on this one guys and so pleased you liked it.

Hans,
Many thanks for the listen. That snare drum started out as an 8bit sample which I made in the 1980s, which may explain the "hollow" sound.

Janice and Bud,
What can I say? You're just too kind! Yes, I hope to stick around for a while this time.

Ezekiel,
I came up with that guitar riff whilst just messing around and then it somehow turned into a song. So pleased you enjoyed it and many thanks.

Nicely done, Rog. I dig the well-crafted lyrics. The vocals are really good, and you have a very cool break at about 2:30 that adds a huge amount of dynamics. The bass sounds great, as does all the instruments. That riff moves the body. Well done, Prof.

Enjoy whatever happens!

User Tip: How to add drum fills without changing any other tracks

MarioD has shared some great advice when it comes to adding drum fills without changing any other tracks in your song:

There have been a number of questions asking how to add drum fills without changing any other tracks in a song. This is especially important if one is holding a chord for a few measures and wants to add a drum fill prior to the next chord. The following is how to accomplish that:

1-get the instruments/tracks to play like you want but don't worry about the drums for now.
2-generate the song.
3-freeze all tracks
4-unfreeze the drum track
5-add your fills where you want them
6-generated the song again - note this will only generate the drum track and not the frozen tracks
7- when you get the drums like you want them freeze the track
