BLOOD ON THE RIVER

blood on the river
whiskey in the jar
soul as black as tar
devil's a-waitin'
to take me home
can't you smell the fire?

mississippi knows where your secret goes
   down, down, down
   but you can't hide
   from that voice inside
of a ghost you'll never drown.

haunted by visions
tortured by love
cursed by father and son
beware the shadows
i'll be there; you'll never know
'til the deed is done

mississippi knows where your secret goes
   down, down, down
   but you can't hide
   from that voice inside
of a ghost you'll never drown.

who'll be my witness
who'll be my judge
who'll testify for me?
won't ask forgiveness
i know no sin
hangman'll set me free

mississippi knows where your secret goes
   down, down, down
   but you can't hide
   from that voice inside
of a ghost you'll never drown.

blood on the river
blood on my hands
heart as black as tar
devil's a-waitin'
to take me home
can't you smell the fire?
can't you smell the fire?
can't you smell the fire?

Hello Floyd, you are certainly right; swampy, spooky and a bit dark lyrics (the latter is my addition).
But...
A hell of a song!
Very cool with that banjo and violin and your brilliant singing! Yes, they really make this song!
I enjoyed everything in it. Probably I like dark songs...

There is nothing more I can add to this, or maybe one thing...
Make some more songs like this one too!

Floyd,

This is a great collaboration by you and Robert. Love the arrangement and your vocal is perfect. Absolutely outstanding production!

The only thing this song needs is a plate of Polk Salad... smile

Floyd and Robert, you both should be very proud of this one.
The lyrics were fantastic as was Floyd's vocal, loved those effects!
Everything was mixed perfectly, as usual.

This one definitely is one of your best and you have had some really outstanding songs posted.

Excellent lyrics, the music backing fits them perfectly. I like the way it builds the arrangement, then drops out. Very nice listen.
Vocals are good also... everything just fits together. NICE !!

Hey, YES, that's spooky enough for Halloween for sure. Love the occasional use of delay on the vocals. Fiddle trampled on the vocals over the 2nd chorus, which might be a result of my listening environment. Nice work!

Floyd,

Like this one a lot . . . a different write, feel and sound for you. Nice use of delay on that vocal—creates that haunting feel to this one. I’m on my laptop so not the best medium to provide production suggestions, but it seems to me the vocal is a little too . . . not sure I can find the right word . . . tamped down? Too low end? Particularly later in the song, starting shortly after the second chorus, maybe as some of the other instrumentation kicks in where it almost gets diminished a tad for me. I'm the only one mentioning it, so It’s most likely just what I’m listening on. Cool tune regardless.

All my best,

Deej

very cool song. As an older Australian I still don't "get" the modern sensation that is halloween but I do get fabulous music and this songs is certainly that. The "breakdown" section show just how well you can carry a song with almost no accompaniment.
Terrific arrangement and the slide fade ending is POIFEK!

Cheers

Sweet swampy sound. Interesting and very cool write --quite different from the fj I listen to a lot, and a great addition to the playlist. You chose the perfect band, and mixed them so pro. Robert Randall Burke adds his 90dB influence and you guys wrote a beauty, Floyd.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Hello Floyd,
I'm still catching up on all these new songs.
Here is my feedback.

Technical feedback:
  • Excellent mix with a pretty cool use of echo/delay
  • I love the drums
  • Your vocals are a bit too far away/behind the other instruments for my taste. I would increase the dry part of the vocals a bit.

Artistic feedback:
  • Really cool lyrics, I love especially "whiskey in the jar, soul as black as tar" and "but you can't hide from that voice inside".
I guess the latter will be in a future song of mine.
  • I like the dark mood you and Robert create both lyrically and sonically.
  • LOVE the song, even though there's a fiddle AND a banjo in it smile

Hi floyd.

What an incredible listen. You and Bob have done an awesome job creating this. Although the tempo and the vibe are quite different, for some reason this reminded me of the "Devil Went Down To Georgia". Maybe it was because of the key, the "swamp" mood, or the type of arrangement, or even the strongly featured fiddle that impacted on me.

These lyrics, the melody, the arrangement and your performance are first class all the way. I loved the chorus, and I loved the way that song ended with verse 1. They tied the whole journey together really, really well.

To my ears, this was the 'toppest' of top-notch listening and then some!

Fiddle "chucks" sound great.
Vocal sounds great.
Effects sound great.
Drum sound great.

Hrm, there seems to be a common theme here. wink

Catchy, too!

Haven't heard anything from 90db in years, miss his music.
