Meadow LarkBeen away for a while again - wife's medical issues. I put this together a couple of months ago. Just now having the time to upload it. I realize the name of the bird is spelled "meadowlark", but this song is not named after the bird. An old friend of mine has a daughter named Meadow Lark - her real name. I couldn't come up with a name for the song, and for some reason, I thought of her - thus the name of the song. I tried very hard to get a sound on the pedal steel similar to that of Sarah Jory - a fantastic pedal steel player from Ireland. I've followed her for quite a few years. Alan, IMHO you copied her playing style extremely well - great work on that.
PS - I liked her playing so I went on Amazon to purchase a CD or two. What a shock I got as they were $50-$70 USD! I'll pass, way to rich for this dude!
I just posted a selfie and all of the responses were get well soon!

And yeah, $50 - $70 ain't gonna happen with me, either. That's outrageous! So, it's YouTube for me every time I want to hear her. Thanks a bunch for the visit. Alan

Alan,
Hope you and Di are well.
Loved your composition. It has a great moody flow with a beautiful melody. That's the first time I've heard that pedal steel track - really nice. Great mix as well.
Much enjoyed!

Bob Hi Bob, Thank you so much for the very nice comments. I spent more time on this one than I do on most of my posts - off and on for over a week. And I agree, that's a real sweet pedal steel RT. I'm doing pretty good for a guy just a couple of years away from 80 (77 y.o. real soon). I wish I could say the same for Di. Unfortunately, her health continues to decline. But, we deal with it. Thanks for stopping in. Alan

Alan, that's a very enjoyable tune! The steel is beautiful and sits nicely in the mix. The narrative development is subtle but clever and reflects the time you took to make it right. Wishing you and Di the very best, understanding there are many challenges present and future. Thanks for sharing! Ron

I hadn't heard that pedal Steel RT before - so glad when I finally did hear it. And thanks for the encouraging words for Di's health issues. She's had two strokes - one massive, plus dementia that is progressing very quickly. There are multiple other issues, but those are the most troubling. Again, many thanks! Alan

Nice pedal steel work on this Alan. I might try that RealTrack out myself soon. The band sounds great too and the mix is, as always, top notch. Best wishes to you and Di. Mike

You certainly are correct that Sarah Jory is a treasure. I have been a fan for years. She is fun to watch, she really gets into it. Good job on the steel editing. The production arrangement and mix are great. Being a steel player I was all over this one. Fantastic listen. I wish you and Di well, Tom

I wish you and Di well, Tom Hi Tom, Yeah, I've been following Sarah for 8 or 10 years now. My favorite by here is her version of Brian May's "Last Horizon". Simply gorgeous! And yes, she can make some cringe-worthy - yet fun to watch - facial contortions when playing live. I used to go to Scotty's International Steel Guitar Conventions in the early 2000s. Scotty and I were good friends. I knew him from 1968 until his passing a few years ago. I bought several guitars and amps from his store over the years. He was a very nice gentleman. At his store, I met a few folks of some importance at one time or another: Barbara Fairchild, Stan Hitchcock, The Kendalls, Dolly Parton, and a few others. The steel guitar world lost a true gem when he passed. I'm delighted you enjoyed it. I put a small amount of echo/delay and chorus on the steel. I boosted the mids just a touch on the RT. Finding the right rhythm pieces was the hardest part. I think I should have brought the EP (R channel) up a little more. Thanks for the very nice comments - much appreciated. Alan

Lovely piece. If you lifted the EP even a little you'd have had to rebalance everything else I think. That section from 1.52 gives the sense of having a nice drip spring reverb on it which works well. Cool stuff Alan. Look after yourself.

Hi Alan. I haven't heard of Sarah Jory before this. I'll have to have a hunt around the internet and see what I can find. This song is beautiful music. As always, your chord progressions flow so smoothly and so comfortably from chord to chord. It's a skill I admire greatly. I love your music and your arrangements. You mentioned, that Di's medical issues have keep you away from the forum for a while. I'm so sorry to hear this. Please pass on my best regards to Di I sincerely hope that you are doing okay, too. All the very best to both of you! --Noel

Hey Al. Your tune brought back a memory from 20 years ago. My band was playing at a festival down in Devon U.K. One of the acts on was Sarah Jory. She lit the place up with her performance. So much energy. Your production sounded great. Loved it.

And yes, it threw everything else out of kilter. Best to you. Alan

I'm more than delighted you enjoyed it. Chord progressions and I seem to have a nice relationship. I neither read nor write notation. My ear and many years (since 1963) of playing have served me well. Unfortunately, Di's health continues in a downward direction. I get exhausted a lot, but otherwise doing good. Thanks for the thoughts! Wishing you everything good. Alan

Hi Floyd You are always so nice with your comments. I appreciate them more than you probably know. And yes, the BIAB software is wonderfully amazing. I've only scratched the surface of its capabilities. I'm totally ignorant of scales, notation, and musical theory. My approach is if it sounds good, I probably did okay. Again, many thanks. Vic Vic, It's always nice when my music can bring back a good memory. I've never seen her in person - perhaps I shall someday. I'm originally from St. Louis, Missouri and used to go to Scotty's International Steel Guitar Convention on many occasions. His first one was at a small fraternal organization's (American legion Hall) facility and had perhaps 75 - 100 attendees. It sure grew from there. He and I were friends until his passing. I'm very happy you liked the song. I appreciate you saying so. Best to you. Alan

Late to the party and all the accolades have been served ... and well stated.
That use of the steel is one of the better solo RT presentations we've heard. And you surround it in a fine mix of supporting goodness.
Best to you both!

Alan,
Another lovely instrumental track—expertly mixed. You do wonders with that pedal steel—very compelling. I also think that drum sounds just right in the mix (I always struggle with drums myself . . . but here it’s just perfect). Falls really easy on the ear. Like that Guitar solo an awful lot, too. Excellent work!
All my best to you and Di,

J&B Well, you got here before locked the door threw out the leftovers. Thank you very much for those kind words. I've been a huge fan of the pedal steel for years. DeWitt Scott, who put on The International Steel Guitar Conventions in St. Louis was a friend of mind I bought a Gibson ES 175 and an ES335 from him (he had a store in Overland, MO - just west of St. Louis, back in the late 60s. Also bought a - get ready for it - A Standel guitar and Randall amp. The two Gibsons were a better choice - as was my Fender Twin Reverb. I met many of the most popular steel players of the era through him, plus a number of country stars back then. But Buddy Emmons on ray price's Nightlife album sealed the deal for me. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for letting me know. Best to folks. Alan

Grooooovy feel there, Alan. That pedal steel sounds great, then the guitar comes in sounding like a baritone with such good taste. A good mix too. Very creative tune. Sounds like that one guitar at the end didn't get the mastro's baton swipe to end it. I kinda like it playing as the "strings" fade, but it seems to be cut out abruptly instead of fading together. HAHA, that's just me trying to find something to critique. You left me no choice. Take care. Alan & Di.

Beautiful calming chord progression leads to nice summer sunshine mood, I can imagine meadows and larks here in the middle of an approaching snow storm The pedal steel sounds dreamy and the baritone guitar complements it surprisingly well. Janne

This tune evokes and floating and blissful mood.
I love the steel. Smooth transition to the electric guitar. And the same back to the steel.

Janne Hi Janne, Thank you so much for those very nice comments. I had to seasrch for quite some time to find a guitar that would seamlessly compliment the pedal steel. Thank you for mentioning it. I always enjoy your comments on my music! Best to you, Alan

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option
Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!
Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!
For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.
Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!
Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
