Here is a song that I wrote a couple of months ago.

I wanted these lyrics to capture that moment in time when someone looks at himself or herself in a mirror and says to the image something like, "Come on! You can do it!" From experience, I've found that the best song format for capturing a single moment in time is AABA form. So armed with a picture and a song form, this is where my thinking has taken me.

The Production
DAW: Reaper

RT 4200: I used Reaper to create two instances of the same Realtrack, and I panned one instance hard left and the other hard right. I offset one of the instances by moving it 10 ms later in the mix, and I detuned it slightly (-2 cents). Doing this helps give the two instances of the same WAV file a fuller sound when they play together.

Hi Noel,

As a WIP, I think you have a terrific foundation to tweak a little bit and take it to its full potential. You asked for comments, and here's what came to mind for me:

1. You have a great message!

2. A suggestion for lyric tweak on the bridge -
You currently have:

Don’t worry if you feel a bit crumpled and broken
And the future looks bleak because the present is woeful
Once you get moving
You get things improving and then, hey presto!
It’s go, go, go

I'm not sold on the broken/woeful rhyme. Here's an alternative to consider:

Don’t worry if you feel a bit crumpled and broken
And the future looks bleak because the present is a FALSE TOKEN
Once you get moving
You get things improving and then, hey presto!
It’s go, go, go

(It's an extra syllable, but when I sang it to myself, it blended fine with the slightest bit of rephrasing)

3. I think the ending piano riff is a bit too "sweet" for the power of the message.

4. I think this is the best vocal I've heard from you in a very long time! It's strong and appropriately provides a somewhat gentle power that emphasizes the "wake up and get your act together" message. I really enjoyed your delivery.

You are a very talented composer and will find those little tweaks that you feel might be needed to really polish this - be it some of these observations or others you might discover yourself.

I hope you find these comments helpful. If not, just throw them in the mirror and see if they disappear. Once you've got a finished product, I'm sure it's going to be a winner!

Take care, my friend.

Alan

Noel, enjoyed this very much! Reminds me of a show tune, as I could see in my mind the actors performing this as a choreographed stage number. Weird, huh? Anyway, no real criticisms. You could always add a harmony part or two, especially on the chorus. That would make it match my imaginary stage performance better. Ha! Oh, and I enjoyed the guitar solo. Don't see it credited so assume it was you. Nice! Hope to hear more...

Terrific, Noel. The first thing I saw was that pic you chose. Perfect. And then the song, too, lived up to the perfection. A wonderfully encouraging song. I like what Ron says about this one being like a showtune. The best kind. In the same way it would be that song in the show that changes everything, making the new day better, this song can do that. Good band choices, and well mixed, too.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Noel, I agree with Ron and could easily envision this being sung on Broadway. Everything sounds great in the mix and you sang the heck out of it. My only suggestion would be to add a very small amount of delay and reverb to the guitar solo. It’s not a deal breaker and I’m still a buyer either way, Tom

Noel,

"Unlock your potential
And become presidential "

I got a chuckle out of that rhyme.
Although "presidential" no longer has the meaning it once did considering recent examples.

You might be the MOST positive Songwriter I've ever known.
This is quintessential Noel Adams.

Good BAND.
Nice vocals!
Good mix.

Great to see you posting again.

This is BEAUTIFUL, beautiful, BEAUTIFUL!!! Not only are you so positive in your songs, you are actually a TOP musician. This is a great song in its own right, and your voice adds SO MUCH to it. I already cannot imagine it sung by anyone else. What a superb job - it's a standing ovation from me. Bravo.

First of all, as floyd said,
“Great to see you posting again.
The Showcase is not same without you.”

The lyric is very relatable and our kitchen has many quotes posted up of positive thoughts like these sentiments.

Love this:

“Get out there and play, now
It’s a thrilling new day, now
 Come on! Rise and shine”

Your vocal, the band and the mix are all a delight to hear.

Like the work you did on RT
4200 (it seems akin to what a doubler fx would create).

Again, here’s to the wonderful sentiment!!

Noel,

This song is outstanding! Your vocal is top notch - one of your best.

Everything hangs together perfectly. The song is one of the best positive lyrics I've heard anywhere in a while.

Loved it all from start to finish.

Sounds great!

I'll echo what floyd jane noted - the word "Presidential" has connotations that don't match the sunny disposition of the lyric.

Stop warming the bench and you'll
   Unlock your potential
wink

That aside - great vocal, positive lyric, upbeat production! laugh

Noel,
the hard panned and time slipped strategy worked but it often go awry. I think the reason this works so well is the strength of the voice & solo in the centre.
I agree with other folk - ace to HEAR YOU again. You do fab work with the synth vox but yours is a unique instrument that works well.

Noel, I agree that this is a perfect song for a Broadway musical.
Great vocal, backing tracks, and mix.
Loved those lyrics.

Hi Ron,

Thank you for visiting. And thanks for your comments smile As much as I would like to claim the guitar solo as my work, it was Dwight Sills' Realtrack #1237. I've now added that information to my band's description.

Thanks for taking the time to listen and pass on your thoughts.

Hi Firesong!

It's good see you. Thanks for passing through the thread. Also, thanks for taking time to have a listen. Most of all, though, thank you for noticing my rhyme scheme smile I spend a bit of time on deciding how I want the lyrics of a song to flow. Along the way, I try many different permutations and combinations of rhyme and meter, and each possibility gives me a slightly different way of looking at my song and open up new lyrics to me. I like the "jigsaw puzzle" aspect of songwriting. It fascinates me smile

KInd regards and thanks again!

Hi floyd.

My apologies for taking so long to get back to you. I've been busily beta testing.
Thanks for noticing the potential/presidential rhyme smile
Here in Australia, our ultimate head of state is the King of England.
As a consequence, we have a prime minister and not a president.
Because of this, I suspect that the word "president" has far fewer connotations attached to it in Australia than it does in the USA.
We have presidents of national sports' clubs, charities or company boards. In some cases, CEOs are also called presidents.
My use of "presidential" comes from this kind of perspective.
But I digress... I'm pretty sure you don't need a history/geography/politics kind of reply to your post!
Thanks for taking the time to visit and pass on your thoughts.

Hi Noel,

It's verry nice indeed to hear you again, after a long time.
I once said to you (or more than once) your vocals reminds me of Robin Gibb from the BeeGees.
And when I listened to your beautiful song with that optimistic message, it was there again! Robin.
That's also why I enjoy listening to your songs.
As I said, a beautiful song and lyrics, Noel!

Classic uplifting Noel song, I should wire up a system to play this song when I look at the mirror cabinet in the morning smile
Catchy melody.
Very interesting chord changes in the B section, I like how the melody go upwards from the crumbled and broken.
The band is very pleasant pop orchestra, but the best part is of course to hear your real voice for a long time.

Hi J&B,

As always, it's a delight to see that you have visited. Thanks for passing through, listening and commenting. My mother was an incredibly positive person. I'm not in her league but her outlook certainly influences the way I see the world smile

Regarding 4200, the only doubler I've used has been one that comes with Reaper (JS Channel Time Delayer). That one is pretty basic.

As I have no doubt you'll rememember, in the earlier days of BIAB, to get a full sound it was necessary to have a few of those proverbial 'tricks up your sleeve'. While it was possible to render two tracks and pan one full left and the other full right, often within those tracks there would be generated sections that played the same music at the same time. The net result is that the sound suddenly, and uncomfortably, went from stereo to mono. I learnt that while it was possible to copy and paste sections from other areas of the track, it was often easier and more effective simply to move one track either forward or back 10 milliseconds and flatten it 2 or 3 cents. This was enough to stop the mono effect. Fortunately, then PG Music developed the process that if two (or more) Realtracks of the same number were generated simultaneously, the generations were always different and the mono effect was overcome. In this instance, though, rather than have two individual sounding tracks, I was trying for a thickening of sound that was spread across the stereo spectrum. Thankfully it seemed to work smile

Thank you again for taking the time to drop by.

Thanks for having a listen and for commenting. Much appreciated.
Although there's a lot of doom and gloom and misery in the world right now, I try to find things to be positive about.
Writing songs is one the things that helps me keep my perspective.
Honestly, even though I haven't been in the forum so much in recent years, I can't imagine my life without music.
I'm forever grateful for that day when I took the plunge back in 2006 and bought BIAB.

Thanks again!

Great to hear a new one from you, Noel.
You write some lovely melodies. And of course, your lyrics always accentuate the positive.

Noel,

It perfectly recreates the atmosphere of American oldies.
The key changes in the chorus are well thought out and very effective.
Synth V's vocals are good, but I'm also looking forward to hearing your vocals.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Best regards.

Hi David.

It's excellent to see you smile I totally understand what you mean with "Presidential." As I said to floyd, here in Australia while the impact of what happens in the USA is still felt, we're a bit distanced from the political happenings. We have a prime minister and not a president as the leader of our country. Since we were originally a British colony and Australia has never fully separated from Britain, the ultimate "man at the top" of Australia's political system is King Charles. "President" doesn't have so many connotations surround it down here.

By the way, I love that "bench and you'll"/potential rhyme! I'm very impressed. They're the type of rhymes that I rarely come across. I think my brain's processing is a bit too linear to think of them.

Thanks for the visit and all the best,
--Noel

I agree with other folk - ace to HEAR YOU again. You do fab work with the synth vox but yours is a unique instrument that works well.
Hi Ray.

Thanks for dropping in. I hope that everything is going well for you up north smile I rarely use doubled tracks these days as I prefer to generate two individual versions of the same Realtrack and pan those. In this instance, I was just looking for a thickening of sound. Thanks for the support of my singing, too. Much appreciated.

May good things come your way!

Howdy, Mario.

You are always a welcome sight in a thread smile Thanks for taking the time to drop by. I appreciate your thoughts and positive feedback. I would have loved to have been a Broadway composer. At least with Band In A Box, I can pretend to be one and that's worth it's weight in gold smile

All the very best and I hope that New York is being kind to you!

As I said, a beautiful song and lyrics, Noel!

Hi Hans.

Thank you for passing through the thread. It's always good to see you. I don't know how I manage to have the "Robin Gibb" twist to my vocals but thanks for mentioning it. I'll take it smile And thanks for the positive feedback about my song and lyrics.

I hope you and your family have a fantastic Christmas and New Year.

Catchy melody.
Very interesting chord changes in the B section, I like how the melody go upwards from the crumbled and broken.
The band is very pleasant pop orchestra, but the best part is of course to hear your real voice for a long time.

Janne

Hei Janne.

Thanks for dropping in. Much appreciated. And thanks for the comments about the song. I'm glad you noticed what I did in the B section. I wanted "crumpled and broken" to be the musical equivalent of "down and out" and then the music to gradually rise up from there (just as in "rise and shine").

I hope that you have a fantastic Christmas and beyond smile

Good song with a very positive message, it has the same positive effect as Marty's songs have on me.
Good job!
Hi BD.

It's good to see you. Thanks for the positive feedback about my singing. BIAB has helped me get better over the years (although I still don't see myself as a singer). Thanks, too, for comparing me to Marty. That's pretty high praise smile

I wish you and yours a brilliant Christmas and New Year!

Hello Shigeki Adachi smile

It's always brilliant to see you. The American-oldies kind of sound is my specialty. I love Tin Pan Alley songs. It's definitely the style where I feel most comfortable. Surprisingly, the melody of my B-section started on the 7th of Gm7 which meant that the note following the F needed to be either E or Eb (since the dissonance of a 7th is nearly always best resolved by dropping down a tone or semitone). And it was because of that requirement that the middle section took shape and began to "rise" musically! And thanks for saying good things about my voice. That's all because BIAB has helped me become a better singer over the years.

All the very best to you and your family and I hope that you have a really pleasant and relaxing entry into 2024!

Kind regards,
--Noel

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
