Hi All, Here's the second installment in never recorded lost songs from the 1970's. I would often write a companion song (and still do) for most songs. Sometimes I use them and sometimes they stay in the notebook. This is the companion song to "I'm Not Bruce" with more references to Thunder Road. Guess I was somewhat Bruce obsessed back then... LOL! It's certainly interesting to record these songs so many years later. This is called Lost Signals. The radio sang Thunder Road Cigarette smoke in the air As the kitchen sink overflowed There are voices in the mountains All the losers we hold dear The rain is coming it’s near Hands like live wires Sparking a connection Stairs to nowhere Fueled our affection Give me some time To sort out the crime The light from a flicker Of lost signals and missed signs The empty stores and coffee stains This old town’s a ghost What’s left is circling the drain Coyotes cry and then fade away Only her memory stays Hands like live wires Sparking a connection Stairs to nowhere Fueled our affection Give me some time To sort out the crime The light from a flicker Of lost signals and missed signs BIAB Tracks: 1178: Bass, Electric, Ev 120 3167: Guitar, Baritone Electric, TremoloBrent Sw 040 3088: Piano, ElectricVintage, Rhythm Americana Sw 040 3027: Vocal Oohs, Background Pop3 Ev 085 RealDrums: AmericanaSlow128^02 Kick Snare, Ride Snare As always - thanks for listening! "All the losers we hold dear" Man, that's a relatable line in a really nice lyric and tune! Love everything you've done with this. That's a loaded notebook, and you shouldn't put it down soon.

Hi Bob,
Another gem from you! What an enticing lyric. Ron already pointed out the line that caught my attention.
The tremolo baritone guitar is a perfect fit for everything else. Also, the ooohhhs, although subtle are a great addition.
You have a way with words few other people do. yep - another bright, sparkly gem.
Looking forward to more from that old notebook.

Hi, Bob. This was fascinating to listen to - partly because it doesn't sound that much like your contemporary songs. Lyrically, it's not that far off, but rhythmically - to me, anyway - it feels like a different writer. It seems to take sound less naturalistic by letting rhythm take the lead. Very cool, thanks for revisiting and posting this! .

Whoah Nellie!! There's a songwriting man-monster up there in them Woodstock woods and he's writing himself 12 songs a day.
Some kind of alien songwriter from another time zone and parallel universe!!
Bob Dylan done called me and said please make him stop he's stealing my catalog!! Paul Simon simply said: with my new found religion I can tell you that the scriptures predicted this, and the end is near.
It might be time to call up David Snyder and get him to write another Bob Dean song and this time make it 4 days long. Arlo Guthrie be damned. That seems to be the only way out of here!!!!
No but seriously, this is another great addition to the Bob Dean canon, and I love to hear these things rolling in!!!!
How many thousands of pages of lost song lyrics do you have man? Do you have this huge barn behind your house with 800 boxes of song lyrics in it or ssomething??
🙂

Yep. You are not Bruce, but Bruce ain't you either. David is right. You are a song-writing machine, Bob Dean. AND you're not just writing throw-aways. A friend from the 60s always reminds me how we wrote like 5000 surfer songs, and I tell him we wrote one 5000 times. You're also a lyric master, and this one is easy to quote for evidence. "Give me some time To sort out the crime The light from a flicker Of lost signals and missed signs"
Thanks for being such a fine inspiration.

Bob,
So you've been a Hell of a Writer for a very long time.
How you did not get a deal (back then) is a mystery...
LOVE the lyric. I felt the melody (or overall rhythm and feel) did not "fit" the lyric. (the lyric could work for a more up-tempo song)
SO cool that you are pulling these out! Keep It Up.

I'm a bit jealous that you (like Floyd) have a drawer from which you can pull songs whenever you feel like it. I always have to start from scratch with every song I love the stories you tell and the images you create. That's pretty good stuff. The song could have a bit more dynamic variation, but that's my only nit. Beautiful!

David,
Thanks. Yes, I tried to stay true to the original song layout. It was a bit jarring at first, but it's funny how you remember sound and feel years later.
Appreciate the kind words.

It’s true you are a lyric monster. Great idea to revisit the past. These songs hold up well with the new arrangements. This one sounds great with your choice of instruments. Loved it, Tom

Bob, what a great story set to music! You are a fantastic lyricist. Those backing tracks were absolutely fantastic - brilliant! Super mix also. One of if not your best.

Hello again Bob!
Well, I'm glad the signals weren't lost. They were very, very nice. Your lyrics are subtile, but strong. They always paint a technicolor landscape in my mind, depending on the topics you're singing about. That is very nice to experience.
Thanks, Hans

Bob... I love resurrections and breathing new life into old songs is a worthy endeavor...if they are well done as with this one they never get old...I love the style of this piece (that baritone guitar is killer)...your lyrics are always so well done and compelling...it's hard to contain inspiration to just one song right? That's how good albums are born! great job with the real tracks!

I thought I had replied to this previously but I must have hit the wrong button.
Cool tune as always. Your lyrical content is always the star. I remember those heady days back in the early 70s living in South Jersey where Bruce Springsteen was just starting to make a name for himself outside of Asbury and the other beach towns.
Nice stuff from the past. I've looked at my older stuff and none of it is really good enough to bother with recording it now. I'm glad yours is.

Excellent companion song! You’ve given us another lost treasure, Bob. We feel like we just read a good short story and these lines are gems: “This old town’s a ghost What’s left is circling the drain” and “The light from a flicker Of lost signals and missed signs” Great vocals and another great mix with those outstanding Americana session folks. Man, you have been writing excellent tunes for a long time. I (Bud) was struggling during that period to cranks out a few simple bluegrass writes. Keep ‘em coming! J&B

Well worth dusting that one off, Bob. As usual, some great lines. 'Hands like live wires, sparking a connection' for example. And I'm always a sucker for that baritone guitar sound. Regards, Leon
