Hi friends,

I have a problem with the "Download and Install Manager". I can properly install it, but when I try to run this software, I get NO window to do something. System tools (Task Manager, resmon,...) say that it is running fine.

PGMusic Support cannot (or dont want to) help.

With Upgrade to 2024 I made a testing: make a new user and tried to run this software: IT WORKS !! So I was able to download and install all software parts of BiaB automaticly and then I switched back to my "old" user.

I would like to know what the problem is. Is there anybody who has the same experience ??

Strange, I have not seen a problem like this. Is there anything unusual about your setup that you can think of? Please find the log folder in the InstallManager installation directory (default is C:\bb\Data\InstallManager\Logs). Zip the .log files and send to support@pgmusic.com. Put attention Andrew in the subject and reference this forum thread, and I will look into it. I don't have any ideas about what could be causing that at the moment, but hopefully the logs will have something...

Hi Andrew,

My system is my production system with a lot of software running (Cubase Pro 10,11,12,13, StudioOne5 Pro, Izozope,Melodyne Studio,and and and). Windows-Configuration is standard, I didnt change anything in registry etc, User is Administrator with admin rights. Everything runs quite fine (Cubase crashes sometimes, BiaB crashes sometimes, but no reason to cry)
I am a power user with 25 years of IT technic professional, now retired. May be I have seen such problem over the years, cant remember.

It is not possible to clear the PC and make a new installation of windows and all the software, that would be work for a week, no time for this. I checked health of windows system by sfc /scannow and DISM. no errors found. I dont have any additional antivirus software running. Now I`ll do some testing with msconfig.

No confusion...

As I wrote, I was able to Run the InstallManager under a different New User Account. As the folders were the Same , InstallManager Run and installed BiaB 2024 Till completion. So I can Use BiaB 2024 under my old User Account.

When i try to Run InstallManager under my old User i geht the Problem.

I will deinstall the InstallManager, deleted the Log Files and install again, Then i will send you the Log Files again.

Ok. You should be able to run that same BiaB 2024 install on any user account. Just create a new desktop shortcut. There shouldn't be any problem with that. It is curious indeed why the installer would work under one account but not the other..

creating a new desktop shortcut is not the solution.

I made a test:

under my favorite UserAccount "Administrator":
de-install the installation manager, delete all relevant folders in bb/data, new install
- problem persists, InstallManager appears as a background process in task manager with HIGH power comsumption (!! ??)
- main.log ends with "[2023-12-10 11:00:55.776] [debug] (main) Creating Main Window"

under a different UserAccount "User"
:

- WORKS, InstallManager appears as a forground app process in task manager
- main.log is ident and continued with

Thanks. Will investigate further. But I meant BiaB itself. You can run the Band-in-a-Box program fine, correct? i.e. C:\bb\bbw64.exe

I can Run BiaB, but Not without troubles. Cubase with biab vst Crashes once a day...

Just to help clarify: The thread topic is about the Download and Install manager. Your feedback seems to refer to running BiaB VST, which is something else again.

Could you please share more information? What version / build of BiaB VST? What version of Cubase? Can you provide the steps to repeat your issues?

Again, excellent. Just asked it you could share your findings. This can be used to assist others in the future.

However, as you have suggested, if this is not about the Download and Install Manager and does not concern this thread, please do consider to make a new thread describing your issues separately. This way, everyone can identify the individual issues rather than them being bundled together with other issues.

Download manager installs ok, can be seen running in task manager but it does not open . Logs show everything is working. Works under Utilities in 2024 ok. BIAB working fine. Windows 10.

no, sorry, that does not work.

There is a difference between Install Manager and Download Manager. These Software parts are situated in different folders within bb/data.

When I try to start it using Utilities in BiaB, I get an error saying File C:\bb\data\DownloadManager\DownloadManager.EXE not found and it is real, this file does not exist on my pc (even I saw the folder at previous tests with this problem)

But I think, this could not be the solution of the initial problem. When you buy Biab you get a mail do download InstallManager, enter a URL and download all the software your licence is in. This download includes Biab main program. Install Manager does not run properly so you have to download BiaB main program manually and then start Install Manager from Utilities (that does also not work, as we see here). So what...

That's right, it's completely different - the 'utilities' one is an older program (that still works), but is not the "Install Manager" that you get on the download page.
I was able to duplicate Walter's problem running the Install Manager on the special administrator account on windows 10 and am working on a fix. But until then, yes you can run it on any other account on the system, and still run the actual Band-in-a-Box program on that administrator account.

Events viewer says the follow about Install Manager.
Does anyone know what these errors mean and they relevant to why it program wont open in Windows 10 yet appears to work for others.

No, we haven't solved it yet. The error is cryptic and only occurs when running under the special administrator account in Windows 10. You can run it under any other user account and it will be fine. Afterwards, you can still run Band-in-a-Box 2024 program from that special account if you want to. When the problem is fixed, an update patch will be available. However, as I said, that should not stop you from using the Install Manager to make your install process easier. Just run it under a normal account.

I run it normally. I don't right click it to run as administrator nor is the box in properties set to run as administrator. Do I need to setup another account under users and use that?

The issue has to do specifically with the built-in administrator account on Windows. This is an account that is hidden by default and requires a special command to enable. Most people are not aware of it's existence. The account is not intended for normal use and it is a little bit like the "root" account on Linux.

Anyhow, here is the behaviour that I observe when I run ANY program under the built-in administrator account. If a program's execution level (ANY program) is set to require administrative privileges (e.g. Right-click on the .exe | Properties | Compatibility | Check 'Run As Admin'), the program will not run. To me, this seems to be a Windows bug. Either way, it seems that if the program is set to request elevation AND is run under the built-in administrator account it will not run. We embed a manifest in the Install Manager that sets the execution level to administrator so that's the explanation for why it won't run. And it needs to be run as admin or else it won't work properly, so we don't want to leave it up to the user to configure. There are ways we can get around that, however for now I think it's best if you just run it from a normal account, and we will add an informative message in the installer explaining this in case a user happens to be running under this built-in administrator account. If this does not seem to be the issue you experience, please PM me and we can do some more digging.

In Linux there are a variety of programs and functions that require root rights, so also in Windows. I therefore see no reason not to use the administrator account just because it is deactivated by default.

If I run InstallManager with a different user account that also has administrator rights (in the Administrators group), then the User Account Control pops up when I start. This doesn't happen under the real administrator account. I therefore assume that your assumption is correct.

However, I have dozens of programs running on my PC, freeware, shareware and licensed products, all of which work even though I work under the real administrator account. PGMusic InstallManager is the only software that doesn't run, sorry.

I think you are using an incompatible third-party library in the source code.
