I used BIAB in 1995 for the MIDI bass and drums on this song. I played guitars, Dale J. sang harmony, and Dan L. played harmonica. Earlier this year I replaced the MIDI with RT bass and RDrums. I remixed it and here it is now, all these years later.

https://fredgrittner.bandcamp.com/track/always-something-hanging-over-me-3

ALWAYS SOMETHING HANGING OVER ME

I used to think there'd come a day
When all my blues would fade away
And I'd have time to think things through
And see which dreams were gonna come true

REFRAIN
It's very clear to me
It's very clear to see
There's Always Something Hanging Over Me
Always Something Hanging Over Me
Always Something Hanging Over Me
Always Something Hanging Over Me

Now love and money are all that I lack
Living in the red just skirting the black
I pledged my heart and I pledged my home
My baby and the bank just called in their loans
REFRAIN

Now I don't worry 'bout no judgment day
We all get judged daily in every way
I've drunk the bitter from a brimming cup
When I got to the bottom it filled right up
REFRAIN

Fred, really cool song. Yep, the new RealTracks slid right in there. Amazing how durable MIDI can be though. Thought the whole band was great as well. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, Ron. We were a tight folk-blues trio back in the day. MIDI is still great to have.

Thanks! The song is from the album I recorded to a hard drive, via the Cakewalk DAW. At that point it was just a recorder. No effects, limited editing.

Hi Fred,

I didn't know BiaB was that old...
And if I understood it right, except the drums and bass, all others were the recordings from 1995?
But your song sounds very nice. A nice sing-along!
Good melody, attractive harmonica, vocals and the BG vocals from Dale too.

Thanks for sharing,
Hans

Thanks, Hans. Yes BIAB was released in the early 90s. I started using it in 1994 on Windows. Switched to the Mac version around 2009.

The tracks were all recorded without compression and I didn’t add eq or compression because software plugins had not yet arrived for Cakewalk. I think they sound good because the plugins I now use had clean tracks to work with.

Hi Fred,

Always good to see a new one from you. Yeah, the durability of BIAB and how relatively easy it is to mix and match from over the years - in this case, lots of years.

A really nice song. Terrific mix and vocals. Is it my old ears, or did you slap a touch of reverb on your vocal - sounds like to me. I know you've never used much on your vocals in the past. Whichever, it sounds really good!

Great song, vocal, and mix. nice Backing tracks, too.

Take care and Merry Christmas.

Alan

Thanks, Alan! (My number 1fan.)

Yes, in the remix I added reverb. A number of listeners said my vocals were too dry, so I am working on that.
