Pretty Good Christmas

Earlier this week, my daughter was awakened by the sound of mice up in the attic.
They were rustling and scampering in the vents.
She spent a sleepless night on the living room couch.
So I crawled up there the next morning to find they had ripped through the ductwork
and made a general mess of things.
I ended up pulling it all out and sealing up the vents.
It's a good thing she also has an electric heater because that room gets pretty cold.

Now she's back in her room, but not very happy
because her twelve year old Mac won't run Minecraft.
Other than that,

Well, it looks like a pretty good Christmas.
Yes, it looks like a pretty good Christmas.

We went to get the Christmas tree out from the shed,
but I lost the key for the lock... again,
and had to cut the lock with a hacksaw... again.
The kids hauled the tree in to the house,
and a trail of mouse droppings littered the floor.
That had to go out.
I went looking for another tree on Craigslist,
but my sister had already gotten a couple that she found on an on-line auction site
because it's the season for saving money.
So now there's a tree in the living room covered with ornaments.
Looks nice.

Well, it looks like a pretty good Christmas.
Yes, it looks like a pretty good Christmas.

There's been a cold going around the house.
I've finally gotten my turn.
I called in sick today - I can feel myself heading downhill.
I might end up missing Midnight Mass.
Well, I hope not, but Christmas will still come, even if I'm not there to play bass.

"For unto us a child is born,
Unto us, a son is given."

The rain let up, and the Tule fog rolled in.
"It's A Wonderful Life" is playing on the VCR.
Feels like Christmas.

Well, it looks like a pretty good Christmas.
Yes, it looks like a pretty good Christmas.

Background

Hey look - it's short this time! wink

I'm not really one for "talking" songs, but after I'd written this up, it didn't seem like the sort of song that would lend itself to a rhyme scheme, or even singing. So I figured I'd do something different.

I got the 2024 version of BiaB, and _ENDU.STY seemed like a good backing track. I worked out a chord progression, and after a couple trials got the vocals more or less in line.

I added some more instruments for variety, played with the balance, and... well, that's about it.

Edit: In case you're wondering... Yeah, this is exactly how my week went. Fortunately, I'm still doing well enough to play at church for Christmas.. Which makes me super-busy (and happy) this Christmas Eve, so Merry Christmas, all... I'll get back to the replies when I get a chance. laugh

As usual, any sorts of comments are welcome.

Merry Christmas!

David,

I really enjoyed this. In fact, I listened twice. It's a great backstory and an excellent song. I love your narration and singing.

The production is perfect. Truly excellent.

Merry Christmas to you and your family,

Nicely done, David!

I enjoyed the mix of the spoken word story (loved the story!) and the vocal.

Hope you and yours have a great Christmas.

David, it’s a good thing you decided to do a talking song. I couldn’t imagine this being different in any way. I listened then I listened-again. I then had to look up tule fog. This was the perfect way to kick off Christmas Eve! I loved it. I hope you have a great holiday, Tom

David,

Very. Well. Done.
(dramatic license. those aren't actual sentences)

If this were to land in just the right place, it would surely go viral. And should.

A song/story with heart.

Merry Christmas to you and yours.

That was unlike anything I've ever heard on this forum. Unique and quite the enjoyable listen. Almost like watching a movie about a family that's trying to have Christmas but things keep getting in their way, but they still manage to get through it somehow to have a pretty good christmas in spite of it all.

Nicely done and the creative thought to pull this off was over the top.

David, just a wonderful tune! These types of narrated Christmas songs used to be big back in the day...glad this new one is back! Really enjoyed every syllable, and the music tracks with it perfectly. You've got a great speaking voice, too! Saw a lot of FX credited, but to your credit, none of them are overused. So...GREAT JOB!

Oh, and I too learned a new phrase: Tule fog. Huh.

Merry Christmas!

The mouse electrocution machine we ordered arrived from Amazon last night.

The vermin may have had a Merry Christmas up in the attic, but if we have any luck, they won't make it to New Year. wink

Glad you liked it! My primary computer refused to work with the microphone, so I ended up having to shift the audio recording to a laptop. Fortunately, the neighbor's dog stopped barking long enough to get it done.

NICE!! "A Pretty Good Christmas" is so much more realistic than "Best Christmas Ever." Man, this is a GREAT story. BEST Christmas story ever. This is so darn good, David. Creative and clever, and should be on every playlist of the season. Seriously love it. Hope your Christmas was special. smile

Hi David,
The contrast between the spoken and sung passages works well
Lyrically fun and eloquently written
Backing track does its job, underpinned by a neat chord progression.
Not 100% sure about the accuracy of the vocals at some points!
Short sweet and fun this one!

David,

The scene of Christmas in America clearly appears before my eyes.
Sometimes it's good to listen to spoken word songs.
Lyrics with melody after the story is told
"Well, it looks like a pretty good Christmas.
Yes, it looks like a pretty good Christmas."
They touch my heart.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Best regards.

Wow! Thanks! smile

I'm sure that it's creative or clever, since it's pretty much a straight accounting of my week. And Ben Folds did the "spoke word" arrangement on Will Shatner's "Has Been" album. But I appreciate the compliments anyway. wink

And yes - it was nice for everyone. Plus, I got to do play a lot of Christmas music, including bass! The musical highlight for me was being able to play cello on my EWI with a pianist and a violinist.

I hope Christmas was special for you as well, and that Santa brought you lots of toys.

Thanks! I was originally just going to play solo piano myself, but the BiaB version turned out much better than I expected.

You're 100% right about the pitch of the vocals being off. I was in a hurry to record it and get it out, and I didn't fix the vocals as I should have. I was flat in a lot of places, and not all the notes were right.

I fixed most of them, I appreciate the reminder! laugh

Clever, warm and fun, from the title through the true story to the performance. Nice to hear a different, more down-to-earth Christmas song but still having the right spirit. The story would certainly work as a movie (even without Hallmark sugar), a future tradition alongside "Wonderful Life" wink Very good work getting the spoken parts work rhythmically. The backing track is very pleasant. Happy New Year!

Hi David,

I enjoyed your "Pretty Good Christmas." A mellow matter-of-fact tune, based on a true story!

I liked how the spoken word verse alternated with the sung chorus or refrain.

The cello/synth pad added a nice touch, too.

I've got two. They love to go up in the attic, but they are a pain to get down, so we don't do it often. And I wouldn't bet on the against a rat. Mouse? Yes. Rat? Not so much. And we've had both up there.

Replying to your post reminded me to finally put the electronic trap in the attic. One of the cats ran into the room on hearing the ladder go down, and he's not a happy camper, because we didn't let him go up there. We'll see if the zapper works. It's got a bunch of different color indicator lights - including "not lit" and "blinking".

It's either fully charged or defective - I can't tell from the poorly-written manual. crazy

The backing track is very pleasant. Happy New Year!
Thanks!

New Year's Eve was my daughter's birthday and my wedding anniversary. So of course, my wife came down sick and I'm on the way... and I've got what appears to be a burst blood vessel in my eye. Who says romance is dead? wink

Thanks for listening and posting!

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

I was heavily inspired by the William Shatner album "Has Been" - Ben Folds did a brilliant job dealing by putting the non-singing (but brilliantly speaking) Shatner on verses, but singers on the chorus. I think it's a fantastic album.

The cello/synth pad added a nice touch, too.
Yeah, there's some great sounds in BiaB.

Thanks for stopping to comment, I appreciate it! smile

This is delightful. We could envision it all happening and it brought back memories of some funny but memorable Christmases past for us.

Janice loved that the tv was playing “It’s a Wonderful Life” as another reminder of what’s truly important.

ALL those many tracks sound great!

We’re happy for your Christmas Eve outcome and wish you and yours a happy new year!

When I saw your lyrics, I wondered "How is that going to be sung?!?. The spoken word was amazingly done by the synth, and I can't imagine the saong be done any other way. A good dose of life. Great backing track.

It may come as a shock, but that's actually my voice. laugh

I guess it says something when we aren't sure what's synthetic and what's real.

Thanks for the nice words - I appreciate you taking the time to listen and post.

Oh wow. I wasn't sure. But you're right about the synths sounding real.

Hi David.

It's January 8th for me right now, so I think it's fair to say that I'm very late (or very, very early) in getting to this Christmas song. I'm so glad I didn't miss it. What a fantastic creation! The spoken word works really well, and your voice suits the presentation perfectly! The story is great and they way you've put it together is excellent. And the icing on this quite marvellous cake is that in every way, the arrangement and the production are outstanding.

I really enjoyed listening!

I was going to let this slip down in the comments, but since Brad bumped it, I'll take the opportunity to say thanks! smile

Mmmm. Cake! Is it too soon to start making a King cake for Mardi Gras?

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
