In Memoriam,

I lost a childhood friend this year to cancer. He exhibited extraordinary courage, dignity and

grace in his final battle. Above all he never lost his sense of humor. He basically laughed his

way out of this world. I was lucky to have him in my life and I sure do miss him. This song is not

meant to be depressing but to affirm his philosophy of “Might as well have a good time cause

we’re not getting out of here alive”. Thanks in advance for listening, Tom

As Good As Gone

I caught every GD’d red light and if it wasn’t bad enough

Today was not the day for me to be late

his mother was with the priest she wouldn’t give up on us

it was a miracle that she never lost her faith

he said Now I’ve got to move on there’s no more tomorrow

I’d hate to make this short story long

I’ve been stuck here in this hell since Jesus left Chicago

When the sun comes up I’ll be as good as gone

All the sudden we were sixteen sitting by the lake

Tellin lies and drinking Thunderbird

How could we have known oh for heaven’s sake

it would take this long before the lifeboats burned

he said Now I’ve got to move on there’s no more tomorrow

I’d hate to make this short story long

I’ve been stuck here in this hell since Jesus left Chicago

When the sun comes up I’ll be as good as gone

Adios, so long, take care, see ya

A shape shifting eagle in the sky

Before you go look up let’s have one more tequila

Let’s toast our youth before we say goodbye

he said Now I’ve got to move on there’s no more tomorrow

I’d hate to make this short story long

I’ve been stuck here in this hell since Jesus left Chicago

When the sun comes up I’ll be as good as gone

Tommy, so sorry for your loss. Man, this is a GREAT tribute! Lead guitar and vocals are really strong. Heck, it's ALL really nice. Love the drop outs and stops that lead into the ending. Really makes for a dynamic climax.

Cool philosophy you captured from your friend. Every day truly is a gift.

Tom, what a great tribute to your friend.
I agree with every comment that has been made thus far.
I can feel your pain as 2023 was not a good year for us either and 2024 isn't looking any better as I have two old friends in hospice.
Loved this tribute.

Hi Tommy.
I can relate. The vocalist and front man in our band for 9 years passed a few years ago from cancer.
I sat at his bedside a few weeks before he went and he was very philosophical about it as we talked over our past adventures,
Great sound and production on this song. You did good homage to the memory of your friend.

Sorry for your loss, Tom, but happy you concentrated on the gain. What a great friend he must've been, and his friendship shows eloquently in this terrific tribute. I can only imagine the song he is singing about you. wink The wore "sad" originally meant filled with every emotion, and you bring them all out in this one, Tom.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Gosh Tom, you consistently put out such good sounding music! Sorry this one came at such a personal cost, but it's a good tribute to a good friend. Glad you put your own steel on this, and I like the picture of it too. How many knee levers have you got? Good job, man.

Hi Tom,

I think your friend would be smiling if he if he heard this. Sorry to hear he left you. But I'm sure the days he was here were pretty good ones. Always keep them close.

This is amazingly good. Everything was done right and put in its perfect place. A great listen. You did your friend good. I, too, lost an institution of my musical life about 6 or 7 years. I cried for a while and then went to work polishing a lyric he'd written and then put it to music. He was one of the best singers you've never heard. But our lives have to go on after their's doesn't. So, I keep him in thought as I continue with my music.

On a less somber note, this line put a smile on my face: "Tellin lies and drinking Thunderbird". When i was stationed at Fort Belvoir, VA in the 60s, I remember me and a few friends investing in some Thunderbird and Mad Dog 20-20. Our unhappy heads reminded us of our decision for several days thereafter. But that's another story for another time.

This song is amazingly good.

Alan

Tom,

So tough to lose the people we love in life . . . my heart goes out to you. The song is excellent, and just affirms in my eyes that you are one heck of a songwriter. Like those dialed back opening lines in the last chorus that let the vocals shine--nice production touch. Great stuff!

What a fine tribute this is to your friend’s philosophy. These true life blues bring us sorrow for the family and friends left but such joy for the person who accepted the end with peace.

This is so good:

“he said Now I’ve got to move on there’s no more tomorrow
I’d hate to make this short story long
I’ve been stuck here in this hell since Jesus left Chicago
When the sun comes up I’ll be as good as gone”

We’re glad your friend made the days count instead of counting the days.

No need to parse things out, your performances, the write and the production are all top tier … by any measure.

J&B

PS Cool shoutout to ZZ T also.

Great song.

It's always tough when you lose someone close to you. I've not lost my childhood friends but I've lost so many of the great musicians I've played with and known. It's never easy. To be able to turn that loss and hurt into such a good song is a rare talent.

Deej, thanks for the wonderful review, Tom

This is so good:

“he said Now I’ve got to move on there’s no more tomorrow
I’d hate to make this short story long
I’ve been stuck here in this hell since Jesus left Chicago
When the sun comes up I’ll be as good as gone”

We’re glad your friend made the days count instead of counting the days.

No need to parse things out, your performances, the write and the production are all top tier … by any measure.

PS Cool shoutout to ZZ T also.
Make the days count. There’s a song in there somewhere. As I mentioned to Dave , I heard that phrase growing up and didn’t think about ZZ until I read something after I wrote it. I don’t think I ever heard that song. Thanks for more of your positive thoughts, Tom

Glad you liked it, Tom

Hi Tom,

It must have been very difficult making this beatiful song about your friend.
Losing him is difficult, and singing those nice lyrics was a challenge. How many times did it take before you could sing that this way?
But, like others wrote too, if he could hear you, he would be sitting there also with tears in his eyes, but also with a big smile;
His friend made this beautiful song. For him.

Great song, Tom,
Hans

Hans, thanks for commenting. I sang it once as I most always do. I’ve been very lucky to have had some great friends in my life, Tom

Great song, instrumentation and mix. Love the electric guitar, so much so I'd liked to have heard a solo.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
