DEVIL'S GONNA GIT YOU It might seem odd to follow up our last tune “Wonderment” with this 😀 … but it’s all in fun. Published over 100 years ago and recorded by the queen of blues Bessie Smith it is public domain worldwide. So a century later we give it a blues rock treatment! We had fun with it and perhaps some blues rock aficionados might recognize Peter’s guitar tribute. Thanks to Peter and PG Music for making it all possible. Your time to listen and perhaps comment is most welcome. © 2024 trad arr J. Merritt, B. Merritt & P. Awesome! That's just a lot of fun . . . Love those call back BGVs, not only for the harmonies but the tone you got out of them, distinct from the lead vocal, sounding like a very realistic group of back up singers. Janice sings out of her soul on this one. Killer guitar work as usual (hmmm, didn't quite recognize the tribute--you got me curious). Really catchy to boot. Excellent, excellent work!!!

Brilliantessimo with brilliantessima lead and backing vocals. And excellent PF guitar at the end. I want to take this song back in time and buy a B&J vinyl album with this on it.

Nice work.
Everything sounds good. Those drums sound good and reading the op you obviously put some thought and time into them.
I like how you take those old songs and make them new again.

Janice & Bud and Peter
It's the coolest blues rock. It's hard to believe that this song was made over 100 years ago. Peter's guitar is really great. Of course, Janice's vocals too. The girls' chorus created by Waves Harmony is wonderful. Enjoyed my listen a lot.
Best regards.

Deej Deej Thanks for the positive comments. When we worked out the chords we noticed that, Dylan used the same ones in All Along The Watchtower, so I borrowed the first few notes of Hendrix's intro to Dylans' song. Peter

It's pretty cool what's in the public domain these days, unfortunately not much in my genre. You 3 never cease to amaze me, I don't remember what the original sounded like back then, but your rendition certainly does it justice. And that guitar solo is one of the best I've heard in a long time. Tasteful shredding. Top work from all of you. Keep it coming...

Everything is spot on. Music doesn't get any better than this!

Janice is at her typical Outta-This-World Good. The girls are killin' it.
A Stunning Mix. You don't even think about it as it plays. It's just Right.
Nice album cover.
This is as good as anything you have ever done. That's saying a Lot.

Cool! This is your wheelhouse - find an old song, and breathe life into it by throwing Janice at the vocals. Of course, Peter's not slacker, either! That's some impressive guitar playing! I wasn't sold on the BGVs being realistic because they were a bit too parallel... But I was sold on them being exactly the sound the song called for. It brought to mind some of those 1920's cartoon, and I had the image of a chorus of inanimate objects singing out the BGVs while some Betty Boop-esque character chides the audience with her Janice's voice. Love it!

I thought for sure you were going to break into All Along the Watchtower after that intro!
Wonderful vocal! And smokin' hot guitar solo, I could hear shades of Jimi during the solo too.
Love the ending with that held note!
This sounds great you three, I love the way you take these old classics and put your own spin on them.

PB&J,You've done it again! Terrific performances from Janice and Peter. Chops galore. The mix is perfecto. The rhythm section is kicking. The drum sound is big and powerful and together with the bass moves some air. Great arrangement, great vocals and great guitar work! Among your best work, Tom

I made a mistake of listening to the original song first thinking you can't top that.... But you made the song totally your own (although I wished that you had used similar instrument shots in the "I don't want no two-time stuff..." section). What a great blues rock shuffle, really hot arrangement with punchy drums and hotter than hell guitar solo by Peter, probably the best shredding heard on this forum. And Janice's singing is so powerful and fiery that I can see even the devil himself dancing and crowd-surfing in the audience, those harmonies are also pleasantly evil Janne

Nice bluesy song. Like the vocals very much, its sounds like Bette Midler song especially on the BGVs parts. Great overall production. This one works on every level: Song, Lyrics, Vocals, Production, guitar tones and groove. Very nice listen.

Yes!!! What else to say? I've already said that Janice gets better with each song, and I'm not about to change my mind on that at all, after this. Clear tone, perfect bluesy sound, the harmonies make me smile ... the inflection on "dirty two-timer" made me really grin ... this is top-notch, from first to last. That guitar playing, too!!! Well done, all - it's a privilege to listen to that which you create!

Peter's guitar Sings. On fire. Some of his Best work.
Janice is at her typical Outta-This-World Good. The girls are killin' it.
A Stunning Mix. You don't even think about it as it plays. It's just Right.
Nice album cover.
This is as good as anything you have ever done. That's saying a Lot.
So. Good. That is hugely appreciated floyd. We had a lot of fun with this project and thanks for the mention of the photo - it was fun also. Nice to have such a great review for our first tune of the year! J&B

Love it! Thank you! That BGV harmony, which includes Janice’s part of course, is what in our bluegrass years we called “car horn harmony” 😀 because yes it is tight. Janice sang in bluegrass trios for years and it was expected that all syllables, no matter how short, be perfect in harmony and phrasing. Indeed parallel was the objective. J&B PS: On the other hand Janice loves cartoons and music from that period.

Hi Janice, Bud and Peter,
Yes, I know I'm late at the party, but I think you don't mind. You had a lot of work answering everyone else here, and now just me! (well, almost).
I loved the song, the title of course, and that delicious swing. Very, very good song! Even my wife was swinging on it! She never does that on my songs, ah.. 1 or 2 times. But most of all I enjoyed Janice! Her vocal really shine when she treatens with that devil and what he is going to do with you! This old song (almost a hundred years old, you said) by that lady Bessie has really been reborn (again) through your treatment. I think she must be thrilled to her bones (...) when she hears you singing her song. I think she would have loved to sing it with you, but maybe God or that devil... Ok, I leave that for what it is. You all did a good job, but Bud, Janice is right; the BG still sound a tiny bit like chipmunks (you started...).
Cheers, Hans

I thought for sure you were going to break into All Along the Watchtower after that intro!
Wonderful vocal! And smokin' hot guitar solo, I could hear shades of Jimi during the solo too.
Love the ending with that held note!
This sounds great you three, I love the way you take these old classics and put your own spin on them. We appreciate that Dave. Couldn’t ask from more … especially from a great blues man! J&B PB&J,You've done it again! Terrific performances from Janice and Peter. Chops galore. The mix is perfecto. The rhythm section is kicking. The drum sound is big and powerful and together with the bass moves some air. Great arrangement, great vocals and great guitar work! Among your best work, Tom Thanks Tom for all you wrote! And your mix comments are very meaningful as your mixes are as good as it gets. J&B

And now to Peter. WOW - that's a guitar solo you can't get enough of. For me it's the best solo I've heard on the forum so far. Congratulations to you all Many greetings Andi ;-)

J&B,
Very high quality treatment of the old PD song! The key chosen really seems to suit Janice's vocal treatment well and the background vocal repeats really make the song for me! Nice guitar!
Thanks, TB

Sorry for the late reply. Took quite awhile for me to work back up to the first page of the forum. Lots of awesome music showing up here..

And Janice's singing is so powerful and fiery that I can see even the devil himself dancing and crowd-surfing in the audience, those harmonies are also pleasantly evil Janne Janne, thank you so much. You mentioned all our objectives and we three could not hope for a better response than yours. This a review to share with family and friends! J&B

Nice bluesy song. Like the vocals very much, its sounds like Bette Midler song especially on the BGVs parts. Great overall production. This one works on every level: Song, Lyrics, Vocals, Production, guitar tones and groove. Very nice listen. Thanks for the comments Elliot. We are happy it worked for you! J&B

That generous review is much appreciated by the three of us. Glad you like the harmonies and thanks for mentioning the “two timer” bit! 😀 J&B

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
