Title says it all. I want to control only the transport functions (stop, start , rewind etc.) with my X-Touch but can't find documentation for setting up BIAB like this so I can operate the transport from across the room. I'm basically a midi idiot but haven't had problems doing this in DAWs. Does BIAB even include this function? I'm looking for a step by step tutorial I guess. Please don't say "read the manual" because I haven't found it in there. Thanks.

Sadly, there used to be a way to control it using your phone from across the room, but I *think that PGMusic app faded away.

I believe (and I could be wrong) that there was never support for a MIDI control surface using the Mackie Control standard that your X-Touch emulates. I had one for a few years, and before that, a Tascam FW-1884.

BIAB did support a small remote unit called the Frontier Design Tranzport well over a decade ago. I have continued to request support for MIDI control surface support, since I own a Presonus Faderport that doesn't do anything in BIAB. It would be so great if the automated faders as well as the transport control could work in BIAB.

Sorry, I've also lost touch on whether the BIAB Remote app works anymore, or what it does.

Adding Midi control would have significant impact on BIAB. Digital mixers, Digital mixer/recorders and stand alone multitrack recorders are a fast growing segment in audio. Zoom, Tascam, Roland, Behringer and countless others all now have multiple products in the line that have midi control and audio interfaces.

There are Zoom and Tascam devices, like my Tascam DP-24, going back as far as 2012 that have midi control capability.

Yes, and it goes back much earlier than that. It would be nice to have, so I put it in the Wishlist every few years.

There are a few MIDI->ASCII MIDI->qwerty convertors about, which may be worth exploring. I've used only MIDIDings for this kind of thing, but that's Linux only, so no help here.

I use a Stream Deck to control BIAB. Using that I can assign any keyboard shortcut to a button. While it can send out MIDI ccs, I mainly use it to assign keyboard shortcuts to buttons on many of my programs. So not only can I do the transport, I also have buttons for Regen/Play, StylePicker, song settings, preferences, bar settings, preferences, and so on.

The various Stream Decks connect to the PC/Mac via USB, but you can also get an iOS app for Stream Deck. It comes free with a few buttons, but you have to pay for more buttons. The advantage is that you can control BIAB wirelessly,

The other thing is that the buttons automatically change whenever you switch programs. I use it for BIAB,Cubase, Photoshop,Premiere, Synth, but mainly I have a ton of buttons for websites I often go to. I have a Stream Deck XL and Stream Deck +

https://www.elgato.com/us/en/p/stream-deck-xl

But there are many versions at different price points, with the iOS app the cheapest.

In the old days we'd take an old throw-away QWERTY keyboard, pry all but the needed keys off (Space Bar being the most obvious), throw it on the floor, and have a Start/Stop foot switch on the cheap ..

Almost 20 years ago, there was a device from Frontier Design called "Tranzport" - yes with a "z". It was wireless and did exactly what you can do with modern days MIDI controllers. You'll find pictures of it via Google.

The device has disappeared from the market, but BiaB still offers support for it (see Prefs, you might have wondered what the tab "Tranzport" is good for).

Apparently, the basis exists in BiaB to implement a HUI or Mackie protocol which most controllers can emulate. smile

I'm fairly sure that BIAB does not currently support the Mackie protocol (it never has)

TrumpetHeinz, welcome to the forum. You are correct that BIAB supports the Tranzport. I actually still have a Frontier Design Tranzport on a dusty shelf somewhere, next to my Roland SD-20. However, the Tranzport protocol is unique and different. Starting about twenty years ago. I suggested BIAB support the Mackie protocol. PG Music acknowledged the suggestion two times since. Nothing happened. I believe this would be a natural extension of the improvements that have recently been made in audio editing. We would be able to control the BIAB mixer with automated faders, as well as mute and solo buttons, pannning, and transport controls.
