So... I have a couple of computers that are getting a little bit sketchy.

One is my biz machine. It's HDMI died a long while back. So I've been running VGA on the monitor. Well, yesterday that apparently also went out. I have a USB to VGA adapter coming in today from Amazon to get it back up and visible. Obviously this is now a front burner got to get a replacement ASAP.
The second computer in need of an upgrade is my wife's machine for personal and semi-work related things.

I'd ideally like to use some sort of software that can be loaded on both the old machines and also on the new replacement machines to make a totally, 100% working clone of the old machine. All the programs and serials, and files hopefully along with settings and folders.

I've looked online to find PCMover and Zinstall. Both appear to be one license per software copy and prices are considerably different with PCmover being very affordable while Zinstall is about 8x the cost.

I could redo the install on some of these programs but others, I'd have to buy the license again if I can't get a smooth clone.

My only previous cloning was a western digital drive that came with cloning software and I only had to redo the serial on one or two of the programs....

Any advice based on experience is appreciated. What do you recommend?

There are a couple of folks who have written here about cloning software. I recall Mario is one. Perhaps Gary Curran, who is not active now. Macrium Reflect has been mentioned here frequently.

My experience with cloning software has been mixed. As a result, I rebuild everything from scratch. But maybe I have just had bad luck.

I've used Disk Genius multiple times and never had an issue. The PC Mag article is fairly recent at December, 2023. The article also offers how to for Mac.

Hi Herb,

When you clone a drive you clone the entire drive, including the OS and OS drivers. If you put a cloned drive from one computer into another you will have issues as the OS and OS drivers will be different. You will have different motherboard, BIOS, USB and HD drivers etc. Thus cloning probably isn't the way to proceed.

I looked up PCMover and the docs say it only transfers data and not programs. If you want to only transfer data I would us an external USB HD. On the old computer copy your data to the USB HD then reverse the procedure and copy to your new computer. On the plus side you also have a copy of your data on the USB HD.

I also looked up Zinstall and those docs say it will also transfer programs. In other words it will copy all but the OS and OS drivers. This looks interesting to me as I will have to upgrade to new computers so I can get Win 11. I have a ton of programs on my music computer! When I get closer to getting new computers I will look deeper into Zinstall as I would like to know how many computers can I use it on? Of course after moving your programs you will have to activate them.

I hope this helps and answers a couple of your questions.

Good info.

Mario.... I was looking for something that would transfer the programs however.... If I can get the data, I can reinstall what I need fairly easily. In a couple of hours I would have everything back up and running. I have USB drives for backup anyway already on my business computer. I learned that lesson the hard way. And all of my business programs have a support subscription. I might just use the drive solution.

If I decided to upgrade my DAW machine, that's the one I would want something that could transfer the entire drive and register the serial numbers for the software.

I mentioned that clone program that came with a drive. That cloner reinstalled the programs and they all ran fine except for 2 which required a new registration.

Anyway.... Thanks.... Still figuring out the best way to get this done.

FYI - The free Belarc Advisor will analyze your computer and give you tons of information about your system, including serial numbers and license numbers. It is a good to get a print out prior to changing systems and/or checking said data.

Not sure if there is any easy way of deploying the total OS from an old machine to a totally new computer.

Although the paid for version of Macrium Reflect will let you attempt this, I have never tried it, and I have the gut feeling it may present a good few problems when installing the image to a new computer, different Motherboard, cpu etc.

Have a read of this from Macrium.

https://reflect.macrium.com/help/v5/how_to/redeploy/redeploy_a_system_to_new_hardware.htm

I use Macrium free to backup my drives and it has worked well these past few years, the free version will still work though won't receive any updates. But as said you would need the paid version to try this.

May have to be patient and just do it the old install each program way.

So.... A follow up. I got the adapter for USB to VGA and plugged it in but couldn't get the computer to work. I shut it off and carried it to my shop. I hooked up the air compressor and blew out the webs and dust. Then I pulled the ram and sprayed the contacts with contact cleaner. More air, more dust, reassembled it and carried it back to the studio. I hooked up everything and just for grins, plugged in the VGA. It worked .... So I disconnected the VGA and plugged in the HDMI. It works. So perhaps between the dust and possible corrosion on the ram.... Either way.... It's running just fine.

I will still be looking at replacing the computer at some point regardless.

Mario.... Good advice and I got that program and it did come back with the serial numbers and keys for my Cakewalk stuff.

Thanks

Just clone your hard drive, if you have windows 10 it will just update the hardware drivers as it boots up on the new hardware.
I do this all the time with Acronis True Image on a bootable CD (select Clone Drive) it will also resize to a larger drive if needed but there should be free version that will do the same.
You will need to just get another windows 10 product key to activate the other PC for like $20.
Some programs like Biab will keep working but others you will need to re-activate due to hardware changes.
Make up a clone hard drive also for backup purposes now and then.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
