Black & Blue

"Black and Blue" is a 1929 jazz standard composed by Fats Waller with lyrics by Harry Brooks and Andy Razaf.

I approached this song with a fair degree of trepidation because It is one of my ten all-time favourite songs and Louis Armstrong's monumental version in 1964 in Berlin.

Vocals: Nigel Spiers

Pianists: 489, 4475 Miles Black, Nigel Spiers
Drums: JazzBrushes Craig Scott
Bass: 1391 Neil Swainson
Guitar: 937 Oliver Gannon
Trumpet: 494 Don Clark

Hi, Nigel.

Nicely done - sounds great! laugh

Well, now I'm going to have to listen to Louis Armstrong's version...

Sachmo's no slouch, either. wink

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Hi David,

I just looked again on Youtube and here is the link to my favourite version:

Just love that haunting intro and the wonderful interplay of the Trumpet, Trombone and Clarinet.

Enjoy.

Best Regards
Nigel

Excellent, Nigel. The piano tips it hat to Fats, and I hear a special tribute to Satch in your vocal. I'eheard so many renditions of this classic, and yours is so well done it moves right in with the others. The trumpet wasn't Louie's, but it was a fine tribute. Much enjoyed.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Nigel, that's a really nice version. Like how you are referencing Pops with your vocals without doing an impression. Nice way to bring a new spin to this fine old tune. (Also nice to see Oliver Gannon, Peter's brother, in the credits. He can really play, though he's just keeping time here.) Nicely done!

You captured the era, tone, and groove of this song. The vocals fit perfectly with the mood and lyrics. I'm confused, is this Real Tracks or Real Players?

Nigel, you nailed it.
Your vocal was a lot like Satchmo's vocal however the trumpet wasn't, but it did not detract from this song.
Super groove and mix.

PS - I though we were not supposed to list the artists names, just the RTs. The artist didn't actually play during your "session" and I wonder if there may be some repercussions for PGM from some artists. I say this in all due respect. If I am wrong someone can correct me.

Hi Mario,

Thanks - yes I probably should have listed the Real Tracks - I have edited the original post accordingly.

Great vibe on this Nigel - super job all round, I read somewhere that Sachmo smoked weed all day for years?
You didn't need the weed to capture the vibe (I assume) - well done!

HI Nigel,

We're big fans of these early Jazz tunes. And everything Sachmo did sounds great to us.

And you sound equally great on this version. Loved the vocal. The arrangement is true to the era and sounds great. Totally enjoyed the listen.

Take care,

Alan

Ah, I wasn't expecting the OZ blues rock of Chain and was pleasantly surprise by your version of this song.
Armstrong's playing is superb on the linked version..the slushy & licorice stick hold their own too.
Your version is terrific but you've spoilt it for me by linking Louis.
GREAT song, your interpretation is cool.

Cheers

Hi Ron,

Thanks for your generous comments.

Yes - whenever I do a Jazzy swing song I almost always use Oliver Gannon's Rhythm guitar - it goes so well with an acoustic bass and brushes.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
