2024...DISCUSSION FREE AMP SIM PLUGINS.
(any dsp programming gurus in the house ?)

once a year i go thru on you tube free available amp sim plugins that sound great for classic rock and dont take over ones pc viz high resource useage.

the type of rock gtr sound i like is in my sig on the song The Stallion
.
https://soundcloud.com/alfsongs/stallioncalfsongsnov2023v-1rbmp3

how the song came about was a fluke...

one day i was trolling thru gtr rt's and came across a gtr rt done by pg artist Mike Durham.
and got very very excited as i realised i could build a rock song useing this great guitar rt.
its my fav one...not 'pttthy' and not extreme. just blinkin right...he nailed it imho.
this guy is an amazeing talent imho....credit where its due.
i know pro when i hear it haveing sat in watching session musos in studios in the past....
who wanted zilch from me and were great sources of tips...wonderfull kind people...
hearts of gold. mike is obviously a session pro.

now to current gtr sim plugins...i just cant find one like the brill mike.
STILL...what im finding about gtr amp sims...and it seems to be the same from sim to sim is now they do clean sounds nicely and metal/thrash also...ie over the top distortion..
but they dont seem to do that sweet sound picture that i admire and love like the mike durham rt.

as i have a IT background i wonder if its a challenge getting that rock sound useing dsp code programming gechniques and its easier in dsp code re clean and thrash sounds...?
i know a little about dsp...but are there any dsp programming gurus out there that can explain why it seems for rock..the sims do extreme distortion and clean well...but not mikes wonderfull tone i used in the stallion song.

frustrates the heck outta me.....lol...any dsp expert care to comment ??
i would love to know.

reason im asking is i would like to add any good sims to my thread in tips forum re nice plugins that work in rb....and after testing in rb....to help new users...
ie this thread...where ive posted lots of free plugins ive found that work in rb includeing some pleasant surprises...and no security schemes that place an added burden on the user.

https://www.pgmusic.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=813558#Post813558

feel free to discuss dsp...even deep coding aspects....gimme any ideas//feedback.

keep rocking around the galaxy.

ps...as an aside no listener so far got the stallion lyric ...>PINK TIE<...and its subtle meaning.

pps...just noticed mario asked a q...preferably i want to do it all in the gtr amp sim plug in.
yep mario ive also looked at gtr pedals....thanks.
as an aside my wife and i love your comedy lines..sometimes we go bonkers laughing...lol.
brilliant....just like your soundscapes.

om

om, correct me if I'm wrong but you are trying to get the sound you want with just an amp sym. Correct?
My approach is get a clean amp sound then add guitar pedal syms to achieve the sound I am seeking. I do this all of the time. There are a number of free guitar pedal syms, just google.

do any of them sound the like mikes great sound in the stallion song ??

note i also replied to you in my first post.

preferably guitar pedals that dont eat cpu and which dont have security that is invasive.

happiness...and i laud your talent....and the way you put work graft
in your songs etc.

There are tons of amp sims on the internet. Google is your friend.

om, I use Amplitube and I believe I can get very close to that sound, but to be honest I haven't tried. But Amplitube is expensive. I would try some of the free pedal syms first:

https://producerhive.com/buyer-guides/vst/best-free-guitar-pedal-plugins/

https://guitarriego.com/en-us/guides/best-free-guitar-effects-pedals-plug-ins-vst-au-freeware/

https://www.guitarworld.com/features/best-free-plugins-for-guitarists

Also you probably will have to tweak the effect to achieve that sound.

mario.

thanks for the reply...
actually ive tried a few on your list...but ill have a go again...
i tried freeamp by fretted synth for awhile...and did ok with it.

maybe im too picky but each time i listen to a amp or pedal sym on you tube ...i go...ok for metal or thrash or clean. .but not what im looking for.

even the new hardware units dont crank me up...once again cleans or thrash sounds ok...but not what i want. which is why i wonder if its not possible in dsp code....

if i see one more ad saying get the british sound...im gonna cry...lol.
bs often...lol. ill believe it if i can hear the lovely guitar sound theme like on bowies rebel rebel which ive played along to a ton of times to keep my fingers
fit...british sound in gear ads...my A...lol

what i would love is if a dsp programming pro came on here and commented also...could be interesting for us all.

i know the big thing these days is AI..but i wanna see if one day i can say to a AI amp sim plugin gimme the guitar sound like a certain classic rock guitar player. ?

recently i was pleasantly surprised to find one sim could get very close to some of van halens great sound pictures.

mike...

believe me ive tried a ton of stuff from the net and in my fav gear shop.and only come here once ive done so. ive even tried hardware units etc etc.
the kempers etc are nice from what i see but way outside my budget.
frankly im stupid...years ago i had an oddball gtr amp that would blow away lots of the current stuff..but i sold it. regret it to this day.
i was trying to be kind to a up and coming very talented player.

fyi ive seen very interesting oddball gtr rigs in big studios used by very talented session musos that would blow me away. ...coming off two inch smpex tape on playback amazing sound pictures...sigh.
i couldnt get close....some of them were very kind to me...and asked nothing in return. which is why here at pg i try to pay it forward.

now im off to see the euro footie on fox..scotland playing.

happiness.
