The previous thread I started was about 'concept' albums, and I hope it continues to grow.
My attempt at such was never meant as a means to financial success, just a learning experience.
But it got me thinking...
That's always a dangerous thing. <grin>
When I was a very young musician, I got paid $50 a gig to play Taps at funerals. Goes without saying who these funerals were for.
That was dang good money at the time, considering the requirements.
As an older, wiser person (at least I hope I am) I really wish I had never accepted that money.
Sometimes we spend so much time trying to make money at something and miss the true value of what we have to offer.
Just wanted to throw that out there and get it off my chest.
Maybe others have a similar experience, or am I just weird?
/if not, at least I got it off my chest ..

In case it helps, I may volunteer to play, but only when I know they don’t have money. I will not play for free when they have money that would have gone to another professional musician.

My involvement:
I ran a cabaret band for years. We worked 3, 4, 5 and sometimes even 7 nights a week. We got paid. It was rewarding.
I also participated with an internationally recognized organisation where I regularly conducted a program titled: 'Dignity for the Aged'. I typed and printed song books and we would spend countless afternoons, involving and entertaining elderly folk in aged care homes and giving them back a little for what they gave us. I never got paid. It was very rewarding.
No regrets. None whatsoever.
I was rewarded in different ways by everything I did musically. Still am.

I play for money, because I need to make the money to survive.
As a full-time musician, I can do a better job than most part-timers, because I have 16 hours a day to work at my craft, learn new songs, and so on.
I do play charity gigs, only if I believe in the charity, and I know that the other people are donating their time, too.
As a sax, flute, wind synth, guitar, bass, drum, and keyboard synth player, I was never asked to play "Taps". But every couple of years we go to the VA hospital, about 50 miles away, and play a free afternoon for the wheelchair bound vets who live in the nursing home facilities at the hospital.
It makes me feel good to give something to those who gave so much. I was classified 4F so I didn't serve. I've also met a lot of nice people and had some very nice conversations after the show.
But I won't play for free at a profitable venue. That includes open mic nights. I will go to a jam session if I know the house band is being paid and I know the musicians.
But that is just my personal choice. There is more than one right way to go through life.
