Looking for guidance on sorting this out.

RealBand operation has been an ongoing problem with my desktop computer since 2024 when the program was installed. I'm now seeking to resolve it with the 2025 upgrade. Previously Realband would hang sometimes and generate feedback noise after a track was run and at some point freeze or shutdown altogether. Since last year it has never run trouble free and symptoms would set in within a few minutes of use.

I installed the upgrade/Ultra pak, BIAB appears to operate fine as before, but realband gives the following error;
"GetBufferSize function failed. Your ASIO driver may not be installed properly.
If this error persists, reboot windows".

I have rebooted windows to no avail. I opened ASIO and adjusted it to 48k sample rate and the error was reduced to the following;

"Error creating ASIO buffer If this error persists, reboot windows."

I seem to be the only one experiencing this problem because a search on the subject has not turned up anything that has helped me so far.
Operating system:
Windows 11 Home
Processor 13th Gen Intel i7, 2.10 GHz
16GB memory, 64bit system

What is the sample rate of the existing file/song when this occurs?
Is it 24/48, 16/48, 16/44. or?
Sounds like it may be a mismatch in the system somewhere, like the file is 16/44 and you're trying to force ASIO to 16/48 or something similar
Also make sure the Windows bitrate matches the ASIO and the file; that one can hide and cause issues ..

Windows will sometimes assign a different audio driver if the ASIO device isn't turned on first (before RB is opened) here, which can get confusing.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Sound out put bit rate is set to; 2 channels, 24 bit, 48000 Hz Studio quality in Windows.

At this point I have not tried to use either program any further than just opening them after install. The error comes up as soon as Realband is opened, although I noted a style is pre-entered likely held over from the previous install. When I changed that style to something different, a new error came up, that I posted below regarding the GS wavetable synthesizer.

When I closed that error window, the ASIO Audio Drivers window opened and at that time had "None" selected for device. I selected the Generic Low Latency ASIO driver and the info at the bottom of the window populated with values, also posted below.

After closing the window just mentioned above, the yellow background error window appeared, this time back in its full length, as it was from the very beginning and immediately following that, the MIDI Driver Setup window opened, also attached below as the third notice in this process of opening RB.

When I selected GS wavetable and okay, the first error of the three notices posted so far reappeared, and keeps appearing each time I try to close the window. I then deselected (unhighlighted) GS wave and selected Re-Route MIDI playback to default Dxi/VSTi Synth and tried accept to close the window and am now getting the "No output driver selected, continue anyway?" notice.

I selected yes to continue, was immediately greeted by the buffer error that started all of this at which point I just closed the program and restarted it to the same cycle all over again.

At this point I decided to take a break on my trek down the "Rabbit hole" and make a cup of coffee. All I'm trying to do is record tracks from my horn, nothing magical.

Thanks for the input.

Maticulus.

firstly read this to save me pages of retyping...
and report back.
what is the model of your usb sound interface ??

https://www.pgmusic.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=795663#Post795663

i created this guide after helping people over many years.
the basic problem is often a pc needs to be optimised for music production and set up for music production viz drivers and other settings in windows.

as stated in the guide please post back the following pics.

1..your windows audio recording and playback settings includeing the advanced tab.
2..rb audio and midi drivers.
3..the settings in the desktop app that came with
your audio interface.

without this info people are just guessing.

anyhoo start with the guide and post back the requested pics.

happy new year.

Looking at the errors, your system has nothing to work with
How exactly did you expect to record your horn?
Your images show no Input ports available

Thanks, I can not answer the usb sound interface question at the moment, I've opened device manager after plugging in a Harbinger LX8 mixer with bluetooth capability and can not identify it on the list to investigate. I've looked under at least four typical categories with no recognizable id. My headphones are plugged into the mixer and i'm listening to music from the computer.

I've been using BIAB for about 8 yrs now. Each year I plugged a microphone into the mic jack of my PC and played back whatever I put into it, so in essence what you are really asking me is why should I expect a program that I've been fooling around with for about 8 yrs trouble free after following my previous upgrade routine, to continue along those lines now.

I see the same thing you see, but without prior experience with such issues, lack the insight on how to address them. I'm just a hobbyist with the program at this point and had not anticipated needing to go back to the days of "DOS" when I actually knew a bit about operating systems and troubleshooting although basic.

This is a relatively new PC, Aug 2023 with low mileage and RB trouble from the start, that because of my busy schedule with a new employer was left to linger until now, when I'd like to really put it to use with a mixer in the middle. I'm being remarkably patient with the equipment, I have not cussed or spat at any of it,
yet.

Found the mixer listed as a speaker/generic somewhere else, and the following info in an attempt to get the USB info:

I believe I have discovered some of the issue. Apparently GS wavetable is no longer supported and not accessible in Win 11 at around the time this PC was purchased. Perhaps that is why I appear to be able to run the programs from the external drive with my older laptop without the errors popping up. I've come across a number of threads on other music program related websites expressing run problems associated with this issue. It's a bit complicated for me at this point considering there was mention of TTS-1 as some form of work around, but I believe I'm going to throw in the towel and let tech sort this problem out as I'm working entirely too hard for it right now.

Looking at the Harbinger LX8 owner's manual it states:
Quote
PLAYBACK & RECORDING VIA USB
The LX8 is a fully ASIO (Windows) and Core Audio (MAC) compliant audio interface and as such do not require any special
driver installation.
. That means Harbinger relies on built-in Windows audio drivers and does not provide equipment specific drivers.

Here are the recording directions:
Quote
Recording:
1. Connect all input signals to the LX Mixer
2. Set the channel level controls and MAIN level fader so that the MAIN level meters show the mix peaking somewhere around 0 dB
3. Make sure the LX Mixer 14 WAVE OUT USB DEVICE is selected as the audio input device within (a) the PC’s system settings and (b) within (Band-in-a-Box and RealBand) the DAW software
4. Arm the stereo DAW track and press record. The LX Mixer’s MAIN MIX will now be recorded by the DAW
For your issue step three is the important one.

Question 1: When you go to the Windows 11 recording audio settings do you see "WAVE OUT USB DEVICE" as a selection? If no then Windows is not seeing the mixer. If Windows doesn't see the mixer then RealBand can't see the mixer. If yes then

Question 2: When you open RealBand and navigate to Options > Preferences > Audio and select the Drivers button do you see "WAVE OUT USB DEVICE" Windows Drivers Audio Input Driver and, is "WAVE OUT USB DEVICE" selected?

Maticulus.

(great info Jim.)

my reply...to add to jim's info.

1..lots of us here use rb. ive lost count how many songs.
so its a question of setting things up correctly in windows and rb.
2..you said ' I've been using BIAB for about 8 yrs now. Each year I plugged a microphone into the mic jack of my PC and played back whatever I put into it...'
my answer is in this case you would have had latency if useing on board pc sound.
the preferred way is mic>>usb interface or mixer (in your case harbinger)>>pc running rb or whatever multitrack daw.
this is the norm.
3..as youve been running bb fine for 8 years please post pics of biab audio and midi driver settings.

Might this be a case where a generic ASIO driver like ASIO4ALL or FlexASIO would be useful?

If the Windows wavetable synth itself is a problem, one of the VST synths or something like VirtualMIDISynth or FluidSynth might be an option.

Thanks to all who replied, please be reminded that the error precedes the use of the mixer. I plugged the mixer in so that I could track down the USB information asked for earlier in the thread. My issue is trying to open RB without an error setting as I've done in the past. I should be able to click on the program icon, and the program open without indicating there's a problem. I'm getting an error before I ask it to do anything. The mixer is set as the output device in windows, but that hasn't stopped the error from appearing when RB is opened.

I do appreciate the assistance and will try to identify and track down as much as I can, vacation is over Monday so if this isn't resolved over the weekend I'll have to bug the hell out of the creators in my spare time.

Update, I recently acquired Dorico 5 at a steep discount, a parting gift as the owner of a Finale product that is no longer being supported, and recalled seeing the associated ASIO device option (Steinberg) to the generic version and selected it to see what would happen. No more errors on startup and immediately the mixer appeared in the input/output windows of the ASIO driver window, (Remember this was not a mixer problem).

This is a convoluted process, the guidance was orderly, but the organization in windows is a horror show (To me). The bits and pieces I searched for as instructed were all over the place with almost as many different screens popping up as there were search subjects.

I still want PGM to finalize the error as I move on to the next stage of making sure I can repeatedly set everything up to record and playback using the mixer. I picked up my horn about 10 yrs ago and started playing seriously, practicing steady and that lead me to BIAB, now that my playing has advanced considerably and I'm playing with background, I need to step up my audio as my playing has continued to advance.

Thanks again for the help and patience. I've learned from the exercise.

Next day now. No errors on program startup, I do get notices when the programs are opened with the mixer off/disconnected which I find unsettling despite it being minor considering I've never had these issues before from simply opening the program.

Currently sound from the PC, to mixer, to headphones is fine. There is meter movement on mixer from the connected mic input, but no meter movement, or recording in RB or BIAB. Seems like a simple solution but getting input sorted is not working out and starting to get aggravating. I am certain the output driver is correct in RB as indicated in the snapshot above bc I just specified the name (Harbinger) in the title in windows setup and it now reads that in RB, but the input side has not changed to read the exact same title, or at least I can not see the entire description line to confirm. I do know that's the correct associated driver because in the windows settings, when the mixer is turned off both of those drivers disappear as output/input options.

my reply...

1..have you looked at manual pages 13/14 lx8 usb walkthrough ?
2..ive tried to find out on the net and harbinger site re downloading a harbinger specific low latency asio driver but cant locate one.
some manufacturers only offer a generic driver.
i would talk to harbinger to clarify if the driver is a generic usb driver or a harbinger specific low latency driver. generic as mentioned by jim.
ideally to get low latency you need a asio driver thats low latency rather than useing a generic driver.
3..it is very important to assess the latency of the whole shebang... my rig here its low thus no probs.
i never have probs in either biab or rb or also reaper. here my latency is 4 millisecs and i could get lower.
4..note...you are being helped by very 'very' experienced people here regarding getting you set up properly....actually this pg site has probably the best around.
but who will be just guessing without knowing pertinent settings regarding your rig.
posting pics of settings also helps pg support diagnose.
in this vein...
5..i asked you upthread to post pics of your win recording and playback settings (includeing advanced tab)...in order to see how things were set up in win and to get a complete picture of your rig.
but such have not been posted back.
so we are flying blind.

note i'm haveing trouble looking at your settings pics as i am vision impaired and thus squinting.
so others will need to comment re your posted pics.

in summary you need two things for recording...
correct setup in win and correct low latency settings in rb and of course the correct mixer routing over usb.

hth.

om
ps..i would suggest once your set up you take pics of your settings.
particularly if your on the net and allowing win os updates.
i would urge you to...at your leisure peruse my various tip threads in pg tips forum.

In your Audio Settings second image I see you managed to get it set to 16/44 .. this was likely the cause of the initial issue; it was trying to use 48 (mixer) & 44(RB) which didn't mix..

Also, just as a side note/heads up, you have Input for MONO set to Left, so when using the mixers output you will be recording only the left channel (which is OK in many situations).
Just something to remember moving forward.

RB is kind of tricky for L/R to some people, but once you understand how it works you'll get it.
Usually Input 1 is left side, Input 2 is right side, etc (and the panning on the mixer itself can override this), so if you get weird issues when you go to actually record that may be in play.
You change that setting to Both when troubleshooting to narrow down where the issue lies.
The Caveat is IF the target track is a MONO track RB will record 2 tracks (L/R - Both), allowing you to see which side your signal is coming in on.

Yes I've been working from the specified pages. For some of the images requested I had to first find out where they're located. Since location is dependent upon windows versions, search results are not always effective in identifying those locations when they've been moved/tiered. Frustration and productivity are not a good match.

Thanks for pointing that out, I didn't change those settings initially, they were either default, or a product of the progress I made with driver selection so far.

It's not, I'm not able to record in RB or BB and haven't figured out why. It's all one way USB traffic, all out from the computer through the mixer but nothing from the mixer going back into a track in RB or BIAB. There's no meter movement in either application when using the mic plugged into the mixer. I can hear music from the PC in my head sets and I can hear audio input to the mic in the head sets, but nothing makes it to a track in the program. So one problem solved only to be replaced with another.
