I have been holding off on buying upgrades waiting for some real gypsy jazz backing tracks in the style of Django Reinhardt. Michael Horowitz who is owner of www.djangobooks.com can be a good resource for locating good musicians for this project.

This should also include bossa, bolero, and tango gypsy jazz styles.

Thanks!!!

I think that gets you to those tracks.
I believe you have to update to 2011 to use those new tracks though.

there are some great Gypsy realtracks available with the new 2011 version of BIAB.
They have John Jorgenson plaing Rhythm and Solos as well.
They sound really great.

It`s the standards 4/4 beat rhythmn comping, also a Ballad style, which sounds good.

Unfortunately there are no Waltz styles, which are very often played in Gypsy and no Bossas.
The Gypsy Bossa is played completely different than the regular Brazilian Bossa.
So I`ll put this on the wishlist for the next upgrade.

Might be able to use the 4/4 realtracks in 3/4 waltz
Try loading them and see if they work

I don`t even need to try. There is a difference between "it works somehow" and it sound like a Gypsy 3/4 rhythm. The Waltzes in Gypsy Jazz are played very differently than the 4/4s, so just cutting one beat off won`t do it;-))

I`m very happy with what we`ve got so far, but one can have dreams, and I know PGMusic makes them come true, the always do:-)

In Gypsy Jazz, the word Tremolo means a rapid up and down strumming of the guitar strings, usually while holding a chord. There may be another word for this fast repeated strumming of strings, but I see a reference to "mandolin tremolo" in some styles that should be similar to the Gypsy Tremolo, except mandolin tremolo is usually only on one string pair.

In practice, the volume of the Tremolo can rise from a very soft level to max volume, or fall from max volume to a low level. Don't know how RB would allow one to specify this, and how long to hold the tremolo. But, I imagine it would be easy to record ten or so tremolo chords and let the RealTracks pitch-shifting create needed chords.

I also agree with Sandra that having Gypsy Bolero, Tango and Bossa styles would be a great addition to the Gypsy styles in RB2011.

As long as I'm making a wish list, there is a significant trend in Gypsy Jazz to incorporate an accordion as a solo instrument along with guitar and violin (listen to Romane, HotClub of SanFrancisco, Pearl Django for examples). I have used the MIDI Tango accordion to simulate the style but it would be great to have some RealTracks for Accordion in both wet and dry musette timbres.

Keep up the good work in adding to BIAB - I've been using it almost since it was first released.

I've been printing out some lead sheets for our rhythm guitarist who doesn't read music, and noticed that there is no chord chart style for Gypsy Jazz. The Jazz and Jazz-high fingering and voicings are way different than GJ.

Any chance of adding GJ-style chord charts for notation/lead sheet? I'm assuming that the GJ Real Tracks notes for the rhythm parts must be using the correct voicings, so the info should be available from the real tracks.

It also occurred to me that although I don't use Tabs, if I select GJ chord voicings, I should get the corresponding Tabs fingering when Tabs are enabled on the notation screen.

Hoping to see this in an update, hopefully the next one.

You can do this now yourself if you have good enough ears. These are audio files and have to be transcribed note for note manually into a sequencer. That means you listen to the part and enter the notes using a keyboard or mouse clicks. You can do a pitch to midi conversion on single note tracks but not chords. Transcribing an audio RT into midi is what creates the notation and tabs.
I would think a fast strumming guitar part would be pretty difficult to transcribe into midi since Peter hasn't done it already but maybe it's on his list of things to do.

Thanks for the comment, but I'm not so much interested in getting the musical notation notes as I am getting the guitar chord chart diagrams to use the gypsy voicing, which is usually on the low 3 or 4 strings with 3 or 4 notes. For example, a C7 played in the 3rd fret would be 3x23xx. Better example, Cm7 in 3rd fret would be 3x134x rather than the jazz-style 3x343x.

The question I am asking is that even for songs without real tracks, when you specify a Cm7 chord, for example, what diagram and tab should be displayed in notation -- I'm suggesting that a new Guitar Chord Diagram type "Gypsy Jazz" be added to the notation option dialog in addition to "Jazz", "Jazz-high", "Mandolin", etc. I don't think that the notation diagrams are generated from the midi notes of the transcribed realtracks - they are just using fingerings that voice well together. Thus, having the gypsy voicings would help newbies learn this style of chord.

Anyway, I do appreciate the difficulty in transcribing realtracks to midi. There must be some honking big program that parses the realtracks to generate the notes you can see on many of the real tracks in the notation display. I originally thought about a midi guitar being used, but the sound of a Selmer/Macafferri guitar is so unique that it must be picked up acoustically and then processed by a program that sorts out the notes into midi events.

Best regards

Nope, that honkin big program is called the ears of a trained musician, ask Mac he's one of them. There is no program for this. These are audio files recorded on real instruments in a real studio, no midi here. I've said it a million times now, RT's are no different than a CD of your favorite band. You want the notation of what your favorite player did on a commercial CD? You have to sit down and write it out note for note and you want the hand positions with fingering? Have fun. RT's are the same.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
