One thing I have noticed that seems a glaring mistake in BIAB is that in real music, pushes are many times lead by the kick drum. There is no provision in BIAB to initiate a Real Drum kick drum push. I have had BIAB for over ten years and I have waited patiently for this to happen. How many times when playing live music does the drummer lead a push with his kick? It is one of the most common pushes there is. The kick and bass guitar lock and hit a push together in so many songs that you can't count them. If you would make that happen you would make a lot of musicians happy. The main push you have in BIAB is a cymbal. In real music the cymbal by it's self is not as often the main thing the drummer uses to initiate a push.

Also it would be nice if you could put 8 chords per measure instead of only four. Many songs have a quick chord change with a push to the next beat with a different chord. It would be great to do a push with a kick drum and use a chord on the push to a new chord at the beginning of the next beat.

I love Band In A Box and do all my song writing with it. It is the best writing and composing tool I have ever used so don't think I'm unhappy because I am very happy with BIAB. The pushes are the most common thing I have to deal with and how to make them sound natural.

Thank You,
Gregory Hough

Notes Norton sells expanded styles to give the feel of 8 chords to the bar. And his midi drum styles can be edited to do what you want.

I don't know about glaring anything missing, however given the pedigree of Oliver Gannon, Miles Black and some of the rest of the musicians it must not be something they have felt was a requirement. Perhaps, after seeing the post, they will have a light bulb go off.

On the other hand, if I listen to several hundred standards (my genre), how many will have a kick drum push?

Maybe you could write to Terry Clark, he recorded a lot of the drums, and you could educate him on this 'glaring error'.

You should be able to reach Terry at the University of Toronto where he is a professor.

Maybe Oscar Peterson and the Boss Brass didn't push hard enough LOL.

And that may be where the issue lies - with the genre. The drummers that you're referring to (except for Miles Black, who according to Wikipedia is a pianist) seem to be in the jazz genre.

I'm not a drummer either, and I don't know in what (if any) genre that the drum kick anticipates the push. But Gregory is right - BiaB allows other instruments to do pushes, drums don't appear to have that option.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Dear John,

I was the original lead guitar player and co song writer for Petra in the seventies. We consistently had songs in the top ten christian charts for years. I wrote and co wrote and co produced the songs on seven different albums back then two with Petra and five with other artists. I was inducted into the Christian Rock Hall of fame as well. I toured the country and played for six years and then went back to school and became a doctor.

I have a recording studio in the back of my office and still write record and play. I use in (my genre) many drum kick directed pushes. Band In A Box is an integral part of my recording process and is used on every song I record produce and engineer.

I am always open to seeing things from another perspective. Thank you for your informative comments to help me along my way.

Best Regards,

Greg

Well there you go. I was brought up until age 11 in a Gaelic speaking Presbyterian Church. You can trust me on the fact there was no such thing as Christian Rock and Roll. The wildest instrument I ever saw in a church when I still did that thing was a vibraphone and that was in about '64 and it caused a huge stir.

Any drum ever got a push from me went up the ramp into a truck.

Hi, Greg -

I always liked Petra's unique take on the songs they recorded.

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
