In December 1944, the band leader Glenn Miller flew off to entertain Allied troops in France. He never returned. Now the venue of his last performance is up for sale.

If houses could talk, few would have such a touching tale to tell as The Grange, a large house in a small village in Bedfordshire. In December 1944, it was here that the American band leader Glenn Miller reputedly gave his last ever private performance, to US Air Force officers who had been billeted in the house during the war.

Major Glenn Miller, 40, was simply listed as “missing in action”, like thousands of others. But his death closed a glorious chapter, not just in the history of popular music, but in the history of an English country house. “You can’t get away from the legacy of the war here,” says the present owner, Kathryn Watts.
