Thanks for your reply.

I open the Melodist main window just by clicking on the toolbar to the right of the "Realdrums" button to get a dropdown menu, and I choose "Melodist". That opens the "Generate Chords and/or Melody" window, and I click on the Melodist Maker edit button, which opens the Melodist Editor window. I adjust the Melody Note range figures in that window, and then just click OK to generate the melody.

I've tried it both with modifying a built-in melodist and creating a new melodist file.

I tried saving the edited MEL file like you suggested, and refreshing by using Shift+F7, but it didn't make any difference.
