This might belong in the songwriting forum. While there is one forumite who thinks that Pat Pattison is overblown, I thank him for pointing out the clever things that the Cars did to make their songs memorable and fun. One of the tricks that Pat points out is how often the Cars would use odd number of lines for bridge and prechorus sections. Go listen to their hits and you will see that he is right about that. It gives the songs a little ‘snap’ in addition to the great use of rock instrumentation and ‘naked’ unadorned synth parts that defined pop rock for their time
