Is there a way intelligent way to look for a chord that will work?

For example, if I play C aug on piano and A minor on guitar the two chords form A minor-major 7.

I have to run down to the Keys but I will be back around noon to read your answers.

Thanks,

Not something that I have done, but could work, where one chord just emulates an inversion of the other chord.

A C-aug would be equivalent to an Am and playing the 7th as a natural 7 (G#) - as though the A was played as a major chord. You would need to experiment I guess.
