Comment from Forum: Just read all the blurb and watched the vids and I’m afraid to say that I find this to be a very strange product to have launched. It’s niche at best and it’s solving a problem that the world does not have.
Response from Development Head: Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. My opinion is that I have been using these techniques in mixing and mastering for most of my career. I just never knew why a product like this didn’t exist that automated this process. That’s why we made Scaler EQ. It’s exactly the reason we made Scaler 1 & 2 because growing up as a touring artist I had to write the notes of the keys on the keyboard! Why wasn’t there software around the told you what key and scale you are in?

Perhaps because musicians were supposed to know what key and scale they were using? Perhaps because it's part of being creative to know the scale and key and then intentionally break the rules?
They make a lot out of the ease of removing tones not in the key. But how can this be used when in most music there are passing tones?

I must be getting old and grumpy! (my kids think I am an archeological find!) I think all musicians should learn key signatures and at least some scales! A little theory can go a long way.

If I may chirp in... I actually think the Scaler EQ is solving a problem we did not know we have instead of "solving a problem that the world does not have".
The magic High and low Shelves sound really nice but that's just a bonus. Maybe people should try it for themselves before judging it. The Scaler EQ harmonic bands does something extremely natural. Imagine boosting 3k on the vocals and taking out anything which is not in the songs key - yes, I use two bands instead of one on the same frequency to get the conventional EQ sound combined with Scaler EQ improvement. It sounds better and more natural than conventional EQs in my opinion.
With regards to passing tones. You can add these passing notes to the key. If it's jazz and it's all over the place, then it would be more cumbersome to automate the EQ so I can understand not using it for that reason. That said, most people do simple music with 3 or 4 chords without (or barely any passing) tones.
Producing, mixing and mastering is a never-ending challenge and I really appreciate an innovative product which can help clean up a mix and keep things sounding natural.
I honestly did not think I would ever buy another EQ, but Scaler EQ is brilliant, because it sounds brilliant.
Likely unrelated so apologies in advance. 👀 Last year I experimented with and began to use dynamic EQ in my mastering chain … to the extent that I’ve nearly abandoned multi-band compression. Dynamic EQ is amazing at opening up a mix or giving ya whatcha want on a track.

I do see that opening up the mix using this tool could be very helpful in some cases. And I appreciate the advice not to criticize unless I’ve tried it. My comment was actually along those lines: for the genre I compose (Brazilian jazz), would I benefit in using this tool?

Thanks Dan for keeping us informed on all things Scaler related. With this particular plugin, would it be used mainly on a single track or the mix as a whole I wonder.

Ettienne, welcome to the forum. This is a friendly place so of course your comments are appreciated. We all have a bit to learn about the process of EQ'ing. I also did not ever see a new EQ app in my future, however it is good to keep an open mind. This new tech is coming from Davide at Scaler. Davide has creds so I am glad to listen and learn. I will be keeping an eye on this new product.

Thanks for your reply. I think it depends on how complicated the song is, I just finished an arrangement of Don't Rain On My Parade and I didn't check but it feels like all 12 notes were used
Needless to say, the harmonic bands of Scaler EQ would not have worked. The magic low and high shelves would've worked but I have a master chain for this project's songs already, so I did not use the Scaler EQ whatsoever.
If your Brazilian Jazz arrangements are complicated, I do not think Scaler EQ will benefit you, except if you want to do a lot of automation... I always want to do less automation

25% or less of the songs I work on is complicated classical or jazz arrangements, so Scaler EQ is beneficial to me.
There are whole bunch of (dynamic) EQs available, and I tried several. One of the best, because of transparency and extremely light footprint, in my opinion is the one made by Fabfilter called Q3. Easy download, 30 days trial. Give it a shot. They do run sales from time to time. I had been using it for several years now, and in my opinion it is far better than EQs by Izotope - the closest competitor. Which is again opinion only

Thank you for the input, and welcome to the forum. I really like Scaler 2, so I have a positive impression of the developer. 49 € minus the 3,11 € in PB bonus bucks, plus getting UA's LA-2A tube compressor VST for free was too hard for me to pass up. Purchased and installed.
When I play "wrong" notes, it's actually a mistake on my part, not jazz, so I think I will find some good uses for the Scaler EQ.
