Another super newbie question here. I have software (EZDrummer 3) that creates excellent MIDI drum tracks. Can the created MIDI drum track be imported into BIAB and then the individual MIDI drum sounds be assigned to RealDrum sounds, thus turning a MIDI drum track into an equivalent RealDrums track?

Pardon my naiveté, but I really don't know anything about MIDI, but this innocent question occurred to me.

I surmise that I would somehow have to assign different single kit instrument sounds (like snare etc.) to each of the MIDI single instrument instructions and perhaps RealDrums are only a whole kit performances and cannot be broken up. Clearly I do not know about this topic!

Perhaps you could educate me about this wild idea! confused

Thanks as always to this community.

If I understand the question correctly, it's a very reasonable one but I don't believe that it is possible.

RealDrums are pre-recorded musical phrases performed by a professional drummer. They are not audio equivalent beats of a MIDI drum kit. Others may know more, including if AI might deliver a result.

Of course you are correct but is this a workaround:
Export the EZ Drummer kit as individual stems then assign the correct RD stem sound to each drum track?
I don't know why anyone would want to do this but it might work, I don't know as I only work in MIDI drums.

[quote=MoultiPass....................................

But why would you want to replace real drum tracks—played by top-tier drummers and recorded with the highest quality—with MIDI? That question escapes me, but maybe I’m just being very naïve. 😉
................................ [/quote]

There are a number of reasons but the biggest two, IMHO, is that you can change drum kits (thus having different sounding drums, and you can easily modify the sounds. That is lower or higher the volume of each individual drum or cymbal and write/add/modify the kit, like writing fills where, when, and how long you want.

Note that I am not knocking anyone who uses RDs as RDs and MIDI drums are two different tools one can use.

{edit} I should add that there a many MIDI drum loops that are also played by professional drummers.

Thanks Mario, yes that is what I am thinking (again as an absolute newbie). My thinking about why I might want to do this is as follows. EZDrummer 3 is really easy and fast at creating complex or even simple MIDI drum tracks. No MIDI drum track writing expertise necessary. If the produced MIDI could be converted in BIAB to RealDrum sounds, the perceived benefit would be that I get the vastly superior sound quality of the RealDrums which to my ears sound just phenomenal compared to MIDI sounds. Obviously this is just a personal aesthetic preference.

I do know that EZDrumer 3 can export the MIDI drum track into my DAW and I do know that my DAW can explode the MIDI drum track into individual drum instrument stems. So my newbie (but creative) brain wonders if the imported MIDI drum stems can be converted to better sounding RealDrum sounds in BIAB.

So yes, I am wondering if individual RealDrum sounds can be assigned to the MIDI instruments. My suspicion is that RealDrums are actually non-explodable (separable into individual kit instrument sounds) and cannot be used in this way, but I was just curious.

If this idea could work, then I could use the uber-simple EZDrummer as a drum track writing tool and then BIAB as a tool to upgrade the sounds of the MIDI tracks. My suspicion is that this is not possible, but being a total newbie with the RealDrums concept, I need to ask to fine-tune my understanding of exactly what RealDrums are actually capable of.

I work mostly in MIDI so even if my suggestion of RD stems will work it would still be MIDI and not sound exactly like the original RD. MIDI drums is one thing that MIDI does extremely well as the drums samples are one hit samples only and not like guitar, piano, horns, etc MIDI. But many times they may need some help to sound like a real drummer. Waves has some excellent drum effects:

www.waves.com/plugins#sort:path~type~order=.default-order~number~asc|views:view=grid-view|paging:currentPage=0|paging:number=18

I explode my drums into individual tracks and mostly use Waves CLA drum effects on each drum and/or types of drum, i.e. toms, cymbals, percussion, etc. You can use the CLA effects on a combined drum track also. Sometimes a little reverb or delay helps also.

The bottom line, IMHO, is to forget about converting RDs to MIDi and use either or. Both a excellent tools to have in your toolbox.

Super answer Mario. I have learned TWO THINGS now pertaining to this topic!

1) I just got off a chat with PG and they led me through an aspect of RealDrums. THERE ARE stems of about 100 RD performances. You filter in the Stems column of the MP RD tab and look for all stems numbers greater than "0". Then when you load a RD selection, there are check boxes at the bottom of the MP box that let you choose all or just the stem you want. After loading and rebuilding then all these selected stems (one or many) show up in individual tracks in the mixer. Who knew!?!?!?! (so yes, a RD stem could be assigned to a MIDI drum instrument track.

2) BUT! I just discovered that all the sounds out of EZDrummer 3 are all acoustic audio files and not synthesized. I did not know this. Thus the ease of use of this type of app way trumps BB if one simply wants to write a quick drum track.

Also Thanks Mario for your other suggestions and distinctions. I have learned a ton!

Moonbeam9067, I'm glad that I was able to help.
I do not have EZ drums but I do have a number of drum programs and all but the electric kits use real drum samples, the same as EZ drums. Note that my drum effects suggestion (CLA) works on audio tracks and in fact I convert my MIDI drum tracks to audio tracks and use those effects on them.

Have fun and good luck.

Many RealDrum files end with single hits on each drum instruments. The hits can be copied and pasted just like any part of an audio file. This is convenient when you are trying to use a mixture of RealDrums and EZ Drummer drum parts to make the EZ Drummer drums sound the same as RealDrums.

Because the Mac version of BIAB is not Apple Silicon Native (yet?) combining Real Drums and 3rd party VI sounds is doable but not as easy as it should be.

I pick one or the other: 3rd party if triggering from the piano roll or RD if exporting the track and tweaking in Digital Performer.

Triggering the BIAB sounds on a Mac used to be easy.

If you load the EZDrummer VST then after it put the Sforzando VST with a RealDrums SFZ turn the volume down on EZDrummer and set it to Midi Out. Because Biab won't let you chain a VSTi after a VSTi you need to use
Element VST

element-osx

This is the hook up guide, make sure you have the EXT sync enabled in top left, if you right click the VST and Save Group it will all load each time without having to set it all up again. You can do the same with EZKeys EZBass, even use them for Playable RealTracks sections:

It appears you have at least version 2024 of BIAB. So, if that's correct, then yes it's possible to have the imported midi track converted into an equivalent RealDrum Track.

BIAB has the Playable RealDrums feature, similar to Playable RealTracks, a user can manually input midi data, generate midi data or import midi data and using either the Piano Roll or Notation edit the data and also assign a RealDrum or RealTrack to play the data. The midi data can be integrated into the current RealDrum or RealTrack so for instance, if you have RealDrums you like but need a specific drum roll or hit, etc, then you can select the region or regions you want the riff to play and manually input the riff or import it and BIAB will play those notes instead of the RealDrums for the riff with BIAB sampled drums.
