I just talked to PG and the chat folks did not have information on this and I suspect maybe nobody does outside of the engineers. I wonder if the drummers were playing to a click track for their performances or were playing to their own sense of time. Also I wonder whether the engineers quantized the recordings prior to their making them available to us BB users. I have been listening to some of these recordings and they seem quite life-like to me rather than sample based programs that use real audio samples but then assemble them in a MIDI rigid time frame. There may be no answer to this outside of closely guarded techniques, but I am curious. Anybody know anything about this or is it a black box?!?! smile

It's a black box. There is a Zane Carney video where he states he is in the process of recording his RealTracks for PG Music but that's about it.

The most closely related activity is to walk through the process of how to make a UserTrack. UserTracks can be thought of as a type of RealTrack that is made by anybody but PG Music. Only PG Music can make RealTracks because RealTracks is an idea they invented and they are not sharing the secret sauce ingredients. +++ HERE +++ is a tutorial page that has some suggestions about how anyone can go about making a UserTrack.

Press F5 to open the Bar Settings window, then select the UserTracks Development button, to open a UserTracks Development Settings window. These settings are some of the guidelines Band-in-a-Box follows when selecting what UserTrack audio snippet to use. The suspicion is there are similar RealTrack guidelines.

Most session musicians can maintain a very steady bpm speed without having to rely on a click track. However it is common to have one available as a reference just in case. I believe the ability, or inability, to maintain a steady speed is the most obvious difference between listening to the playback of a RealTrack and a UserTrack. Most amateur musicians do not have the practice time needed to develop their internal clock to the precise timing needed to make a time accurate long duration recording. One way to work around this limitation is to record MIDI, quantize the MIDI data and record the audio of a midi player.

Very Very interesting Jim! I may be imagining it, but at least for the basic rock groove I am listening to, the RD performance feels very real to me including even a real actual room sound, where as the same in EZDrummer 3 feels machine-like even though the sounds are audio samples. There is a "humanizer" function in that program which I suppose introduces an algorithm of irregularity into the playback. Or.... I am completely biased and hearing what I want to hear. laugh laugh laugh

Too bad we can't take a peek behind the curtain - I bet it would be fascinating!

Edit: that video was pretty interesting and while it did not show black box techniques, the story line was interesting as was his playing!

The PG Music RealDrums are drums played by a session musician. RealTracks are recordings of instruments played by session musicians. The MIDI technique I described is one a user can use to create a UserTrack that maintains a steady bpm. I'm sorry if I confused you.
