Over 10 years ago, I released my own CD with 11 original songs and 3 covers. Over the last couple of years I’ve had a Nashville studio singer redo three of the songs. Naturally, they sound a lot better than my vocals. Got the fourth one submitted to them now for a pro singer. On my CD this song is slower with me playing guitar and mandolin, but I decided it needed a peppy Bluegrass feel. Used BiaB very successfully to do that. Style _BGMEDLY.STY plus:
596:Fiddle, Soloist Bluegrass Doc Ev 100
820:Mandolin Soloist Bluegrass Ev 100

Listen HERE. Vocals with this version are mine. Will post studio singer version in about a month. BTW,I was raised in Arkansas and this song came to mind when I was back there visiting and driving alongside the beautiful White River.

Comments (pro and con) are welcomed, Thanks for listening!

BURY ME ON AN ARKANSAS HILLTOP
==============================

When my Dad's time had finally come
He called me over to his bedside
Said "Son here's what I want you to do
When I finally die"

[chorus]
Just bury me on an Arkansas hilltop
High above where the White River's flowin'
So these old bones can rest in a peaceful place
While my soul is enjoying life in heaven

Dad's been gone for five years now
And Mom is quickly failing
I asked her where she wanted to rest
and she said "Son there ain't no use in asking"

[repeat chorus]

Now I'm old and grey and my body hurts
Don't think I've got much longer
I don't have to think about where I want to go
When my days are over

[repeat chorus]
[repeat chorus]

Ralph, cool tune! Love your vocals and the simple instrumentation. Sounds very organic and authentic...just as it should. Only constructive feedback would be that the fiddle tends to fight the vocal on the chorus, so maybe separate it a bit with panning, EQ and/or volume. Song is great without it though. Looking forward to the studio version. smile

Cool authentic back woods Appalachian tune. Your choice of real tracks and arrangement is perfect for this tune. Voice works really well with it also.

This is authentic Bluegrass! I'm from St. Louis originally, but most of my family lives on the Missouri side just north of the Arkansas state line (Branson and West Plains).

That was a really nice listen. Nice!

Many thanks folks for all the very nice comments. They make this 80+ old geezer feel really good. I’m a big fan of Bluegrass and very happy to hear the word “authentic” used in several replies, Of course, BiaB gets most of the credit for that. smile

I changed the fiddle playing during the chorus to emphasize the hook of the song. I’ll revisit that and maybe calm it down a bit.

Thanks again for the listens and comments!

Sounded great! I thought you sang "Ma is frailing" then I read the lyrics. Women banjo players often frail, so it made sense to me, LOL. I like bluegrass a lot and all my friends growing up became steeped in it. Again, great tune!

Ralph,

That is as Bluegrass-y as it gets.
Not only the BAND, but the subject matter, too.
AND the Vocal - pure Bluegrass.

Well done.

I think your voice is perfect for the song.
The 2nd verse could, to my eyes n ears, be slightly edited so that the chronology works smoothly :
"Dad had been gone for five years"
That's no big deal though & no one else has been bothered by what I perceive.

Cheers

Your singing fits in very nicely giving authentic feeling: I could be imagine sitting by the camp fire listening to a live performance of local amateur, but still very skillful musicians.
Refreshing genuine country music to wash ones ears.

Well, you might not be a professional singer but did a very good job on this one, very fitting voice for the style. Great job!

Ditto all the positive comments..I esp liked your use of the 2-syllable rhyme words—flowin/heaven, longer/over—all words that have the strong emphasis on the front syllable, then the weak-emphasis syllable following. You don’t hear it that often, and I think it keys the listener to ask “Now how is he going to rhyme THAT word?”, and keeps you engaged throughout. Great work!

Mike & Tano,
Many thanks for the positive comments on my song! Bluegrass is one of my favorite song styles and I do a lot of singing at jams. As far as rhyming words. I just sing what sounds good to me and rhymes.😀

Wow, Ralph, I haven't heard this in its original slow version, but the peppy bluegrass is definitely the ticket for this ride. So enjoyabole with all you added to the mix. Good write, and we;ll produced. Thanks for posting it.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Toe tapping goodness.
Love it despite the mandolin
I think your vocals sound pretty good for this genre, I don't see the need to hire anyone else.
Works for me smile
