OK, lets stop this nonsense and get back to current events.

I agree with Mario, even though I just had my morning coffee and am amped-up for more.

"we were recording dialog voice over"
I assume separate mics? Issues with mic cable? - had these quite a few times (humming cables). Last year I had an older (80s) mic with intermittent hum / grounding issues. If I held mic in hand - no humming. As soon as it went on stand -hum. I re-soldered internal connector and problem was gone. In any case, if it's mic related, I would try swapping cables / try another mic on same humming channel.

I got the answer to my original question today. I got this email form my "client" where I experienced the hum but with no idea why it came and went...

"BTW, Justin, the film maker, was here a few weeks ago to scope out my studio room for the shoot. While here we talked about the mic line noise. He tested it, and he heard it. He tested and discovered I had a bad, but very brand-new mic cable. We switched it out with another Mic cable, and the line noise is gone."

Still hope to find time some day to tell you all about this project I stumbled into. It is just now starting to go public so I can send a link at some time.

Dan

Winner.

I just had a new mic cable (XLR) prove bad.

Of couse Rusty that is why I brought this question here. grin

Now for a bit of the back story...

I stumbled onto an interesting opportunity to do some audio editing for a project involving a videographer recording narration of his video (voice over work).
I have to be a bit secretive here. This individual is a professional musician who some years back suffered a stroke and lost his ability to sing/speak. He has been preparing a life history video for the past couple years. He is at the stage where he is having a voice over actor come in to record the narration in his home studio. All the final video and mixing will be done in a professional studio.

Unfortunately, his home studio was in disarray and not fully installed in the current location. His stroke caused cognitive damage and he was unable to get his gear up and running. He reached out via our local town FB, looking for someone in the area who could help with setup. Now I am not a sound engineer, but I can set up a DAW and associated equipment (which by the way was all pro level gear). I stopped by and got things installed and operational. But his DAW was Studio 1 One version 7. Which I have no experience with. Since he wanted to get recording immediately, I installed Reaper and showed him how to arm and record a track. He took notes but communicated to me that he was not able to run the board due to his illness. Long story short I have now recorded 13 individual narratives with his voice over artist. He has taken all our tracks to his pro studio where they have incorporated them into a master mix.

This week he has the camera crew coming to film him in his home studio playing live and needs backing drums and Guitar FX. He asked me to come over to install and setup his EzDrummer and Amplitube plugins.

He has promised me he will find some small place in the movie credits to call me out by name for “engineering support”. What a treat for me! I will come back with a link to the project when it goes public.

Dan

There are few things worse than chasing down a noise and finding it to be the brand new cables—as I found out reconditioning a turntable for my kids and connecting with set of hookup wires I bought off Amazon because I wanted them next day. Grrr…

Buying cable can be quite frustrating these days. Many brands one has never heard of, all looking great but rebranding crap as above. Tried and true brands such as ProCo not being available in music stores anymore, way overpriced boutique cables making nonsense promises, the list goes on…

I now buy custom starquad cables made by Sescom through Markertek. Nine lengths in any of eight colors—a 25’ mic cable is $27.49. Some colors are in stock; others may take up to two weeks. Only downside is the lead time. They have thousands of standard options but truly custom cables are available with a minor upcharge. Markertek started off as a broadcast supply house and is the go-to for most large studios etc. I discovered them about 50 years ago

As I’ve posted before, Starquad is actually quieter than 2-conductor balanced wire but only in an electrically noisy environment such as mine in the middle of the SiliconValley. If you can’t hear a difference, you didn’t need it—I do but, at these prices, I see no need to use anything else. Sescom uses Canare, Belden and Mogami if you need really thin cable. I made some starquad power cables (required in certain industrial applications) but they made no difference in my studio.

Mike has a very good tip: Markertek. The store (and factory) is only a half-hour from my house, and I get all serious cables there.

And Sescom is far less expensive through them than buying directly.

Starquad is absolutely where it's at for noise rejection at the cable level. For everyone else reading though keep in mind that there are a lot of potential noise sources and cabling is only one of them - worth buying if you need cables, but maybe not worth replacing all the existing cable in your studio.

Not terribly surprised at that - where you live the noise is much more likely to be coming from outside your studio.

I learned my "humming cable" lesson the hard way. Few years back my old cable gave up, so I bought a pair of "average" cables from a reputable major music vendor. When they arrived... I tried one. Humming. I spent hours, thinking grounding issues, mic connector, interface, faulty computer hardware, radio interference, aliens... Then I tried second "new" cable (from same mfg.) thinking maybe first was defective. Same deal. Thankfully I've decided not to purchase a new interface, instead bought a much fancier Canare Quad Cable L-4E6S with Neutrik Gold XLR. Humming was gone. 6+ years, still going strong.
