Plus "my trumpet" can emulate all other instruments.

When I was 18, I wanted to join the Air Force Band. They had recently played in our town and our band director took us. Since I was first tenor sax in the all-state band every year I was in school, I figured I could pass the audition.

Back then, the government scheduled our physical exam date. I had recurrent bronchitis as a child, and the physical came right after an attack, and before I completely recovered. The result was a classification of 4F - (unfit for service).

So I joined a rock band and went on the road, touring the USA in college town bars, before DJs took that part of the business. Playing sax 5 nights a week from 9PM to 2AM actually cured my bronchitis. I never had another attack. No, I didn't go back to the Air Force Recruiter, gigging in college town with college girls after "the pill" and before AIDS was paradise.

I discovered Wind Controller when Yamaha released the WX7. I eventually went through the WX line as new models came out and currently play the WX5 with a couple of synth modules. My favorite is the Yamaha VL70m. The physical modeling makes it react almost like a real instrument, instead of triggering samples.

The wind controller uses much less air, but I use it for the variety of sounds, I'm a big bag of wind.

I still play sax, wind synth, guitar, vocals, and flute on stage, and the flute uses the most air, but has the least back pressure. I make my own backing tracks as I also play bass, drums, and some keyboards. www.s-cats.com

The nice thing about the wind controller, is in our duo, it gives me a variety of solo voices, which keeps our sound from getting to much of the same good thing.

4F right off the bat! My first trip to the physicals I was 1Y. I was called back a number of times because I am partially colorblind. They wanted guys like me to ride the rails of the helicopters because we can tell camouflage from real foliage. It was about 3-4 years later that I was declared 4F.

That would be....Tossing in the towel.

Tossing the hat means you're getting in. Tossing the towel means you're done.

That sounds like a very dangerous job to have.

Although I wanted to be in the band, I was lucky to get that 4F. Viet Nam soon started to erupt, and there was no guarantee I wouldn't end up in a dangerous position.

While I don't always agree with what my government asks of its servicemen and servicewomen, I have great respect for those who do our country's bidding.

Mrs. Notes and I played for free at the nursing home of the VA hospital in West Palm Beach quite a few years in a row. It was our way of saying "Thanks". We're now playing for the nursing home at the VA in St.Lucie County, and they are going to start to pay us a minimal amount. I guess it's their way of saying "Thank you" back to us.

Yes, and it's idioms like this that give learners of English so much trouble!

I apologize to any non-English speaking people whom got the wrong impression.
Actually the wording was part of the April Fools joke that I guess that I shouldn't have done, i.e getting in while getting out.

First I decided to toss in my hat
Then I decided to throw in the towel
April 1st grinned like a cunning cat
That tripped us up with a laugh and a prowl

A prank so grand, a jest so bold
Told like no other
Like the days of old

But let it be known, just wait and see
Next year I will strike again
With cleverness, jokes and confetti spree

For me there’s no better place in the band than to have one leg in the harmony world and the other in the percussive. Thank you Paul Tutmarc and Leo Fender.
