"Goodnight, Irene" or "Irene, Goodnight," is a 20th-century American folk standard, written in 3/4 time, first recorded by American blues musician Huddie 'Lead Belly' Ledbetter in 1933.
In my version I sign and play guitars (6- and 12-stringed) and banjos (plectrum and tenor). I produced this at my home with Band in a Box and Reaper.

This was one of the folk songs that played around the house when I was a kid. Nice job capturing the imperfect perfection of the tune in your arrangement and playing!

So interesting that you posted this particular song. My wife and I were talking about it night before last. We're old - almost 80. We love many of these old standards. You captured the essence of the tune with this arrangement. Nice!

Thanks for this great old gem, given new life by your treatment! Really enjoyed it, esp some of your vocal expressiveness!

Thanks a lot! I learned this song from one of my favourites Ry Cooder. He can make delicious versions of songs of any genre.

Great job with a classic. Vocal was good. Banjos sounded great, the accordion and harmonica were buried. Would like to hear you bring them out in the mix somehow.

Thanks for your tip: I'll mix a new version for you with accordion and harmonica more in front and post it as a new post.
I mix these at my home studio monitoring with headphones and usually checking with SoundID Reference, that it sounds decent also in car, laptops and even in phones, but maybe this time I wasn't careful enough. I learned, that mixing listening just with high quality headphones or loudspeakers, you must still remember, that very often people are listening in pour environment and you loose all nuances in sound picture and tone quality you built with great hardship and toil.

Chicken Skin Music blew my head off when it 1st came out. I'd had the good luck to have come across Leadbelly in my teens - evil cove but an amazing 12 string player, singer & occasional writer.
Your version leans towards Ry's which isn't a bad thing at all.
Well done - your vocal warmed up & flowed more smoothly as the song progressed.

Cheers

Oh, you are tapping into a fine selection of songs when you tap into Huddie Ledbetter. And you are tapping with great talent, Arri. Your guitar and banjo work steals the show. I wish Ledbelly could hear these versions of yours, especailly over a hundred years later. So well done!

Enjoy whatever happens!

I made a new mix, where I raised the volume of harmonica and rhythm accordion as requested.and even added harmonica to the end, where it didn't were before. I also took out of vocal fattener delay from vocals. Hope you like it now more.

That's a great authentic sound. It has a real 1930's feel. Good stuff!

Nice interpretation of the classic.

Your vocals, instrumental performance and the BiaB session guys sound great.
The mix is open, airy and sounds good on our monitors.

BTW, we are also Ry Cooder fans.

Well done!

PS Given our mostly blues rock posts here over the years it might surprise you to know that we played in bluegrass bands for decades. smile And Bud recalls playing this song in some parking lot jams.

Yes, I can hear them now, Arri! Great job, and thanks! I'm not sure what a fattener delay is, but I noticed the vocal sounded different, too, and for the better, I think. Of course, it's all so subjective. I'm a harmonica player, so I like to hear it up in the mix. Especially the outstanding Real Track harmonicists!

'Goodnight.' Seriously, first time hearing you and I'm already picturing myself trading my Spotify subscription for a rocking chair on your porch. Your vocals have that beautiful "worn-in" quality – like a perfectly faded pair of overalls singing a lullaby. Which is, you know, exactly what this song needs. Let's be honest, current music is all about the 'vibe,' but you sir, brought back the MELODY! It was like a time warp back to when songs had a story. (and no auto-tune). 👍 😇

And that banjo! It wasn't just played, it serenaded. I could practically smell the honeysuckle and hear the crickets chirping along. It was that authentic. If you ever need a porch-strolling groupie, consider me your first applicant. Seriously, keep those old gems polished and coming. The world needs more of that front-porch magic you're serving up. 💗 👋 🆗 ✔️

Thank you all for your heartening comments! When I produce a cover song, I search the roots of that song. I then try to get into the spirit of it's oldest, genuine version.
I'm not a real singer, but used to be in the rhythm combo - sometimes even played melodies with banjo or mandolin.
Now, when I produce these all by myself at my home, I have to sing too. After many comments I'm now venturesome enough to sing with my tru roadworn (I'm 72 years old) voice.
My favourite comment came from a young man: "I can hear the miles behind you, which give you street credibility."
