As many of you know, Dreamtronics recently released a new version of its vocal synthesizer software, Synthesizer V Studio 2. As a result of this upgrade, existing vocaloids were also upgraded. To experiment with Saros II (Saros 2), I started playing around with a song that I wrote back in 2019. I also created some extra lyrics and added them to what I'd previous written. So if you are interested in listening to a song in the style of Tin Pan Alley from the 1930s/40s as sung by Eclipsed Sounds' vocaloid, Saros II, please follow the link.

This song is a lyrically and vocally updated version of the song that I posted on the forum a few years back. The backing is the same as the previous song.

Please feel free to critique any aspect of the song or its production.

Thanks for having a listen.

STUNNING. You are one of the very best songwriters on here, without a shadow of a doubt.

Techie question smile : how did you make Saros II talk? There are a couple of places (especially, of course, towards the end) in which he talks, rather than sing.

Anyway:

What an achievement. Saros II is the perfect choice for this song, I might just have to put the money aside to purchase his voice, myself. But, for me, your lyrical writing and, it goes without saying, your musical writing ... in a class of their own, really. In addition: you really have a way of making me smile and forget about my day-to-day troubles, etc. . That's your trademark. No matter what you write, in which style, what it is about, etc. etc. etc. ... I leave, after listening to a song of yours, happy, smiling, and more capable of handling things in life.

I like to think that one can tell someone's personality by the kind of music they write. I may be totally wrong in correlating musical output to inner personality, mind you; but, in any case, your writing makes me think: ah, a good man wrote this. And THAT is a heck of an achievement, in itself.

I'll save the more "technical analysis" for another time, but I will say just one last thing:

Don't stop writing smile

Hi James.

It is always excellent to see you smile And thank you so much for your comments. Honestly, you have made my day. Again! Seriously!

My starting place for getting Saros to talk was to convert the notes that I wanted spoken from Sing Mode to Rap Mode. Once I had done that, I adjusted the timing of the notes to suit speech rather than music. I then adjusted the pitch of the notes to try and reproduce the intonation of the spoken word.

It actually took a bit of trial-and-error to get the voice to sound like it was spoken in a conversational way. While I was working on it, I found myself listening to lots of dialogue and trying to replicate how the speakers were saying things. My take away from all my listening was that accented syllables in English tend to be slightly longer in timing and higher in pitch than unaccented syllables. This is because English is a stress-timed language rather than a syllable-timed language like Spanish or French or Korean, for example. Once I fully understood the implications of that, things became easier smile

[Linked Image - Only viewable when logged in]

In the previous version of Synth V, Rap Mode was indicated by pink notes on the piano roll while Sing Mode used the green notes.

I hope this information helps.

Thanks again for all your kind and thoughtful words.

What a swell song!

Noel this song is just so charming, and young and fun and innocent, it really warmed my heart.

There's a lot of goodness in this song, and the most important thing of all is it just made me feel good!

I want to go back and live in these soda shop times!!!

That is pretty cool. Extremely well done and spot on genre specific song.

I have not upgraded my SV quite yet. It sounds like they did a really good job on making it just a bit more realistic sounding. And yeah.... you have to pay attention to the details of the timing and the pronunciation.

Very impressed with your results.

Great period song, and you even wrote lyrics to match the time. Excellent use of the synth vocal, too, Noel. You fashioned the perfect band and the mix is pleasingly tight and wide. What do I say: loved the song!

Enjoy whatever happens!

Hi, Noel.

Nice song, and Saros sounds musical. I enjoyed this a lot - it nails the sound and has that happy feel.

I'm going to have some super-picky comments, but most of them have to do with SynthV and Saros, not you.

In the intro, Saros sounds like he's singing "fool moon". The phonemes are no doubt right, because I can duplicate the problem on my machine. frown

There's no alternative in the v2 for picking an alternate take of the phoneme, so fixing something like this is tricky. You can get something closer to "full" by editing the Tone Shift parameter in the Piano Roll, and shifting the tone up or down. That forces a phoneme sampled at a different timbre, so you can sometimes get a better pronunciation.

I don't know what SynthV defaults to /uh n d/ instead of /eh n d/ or /ae n d/ for "and" (like at 0:27 and 2:22), but I usually just type "end" instead.

There are a couple points where his articulation isn't as crisp as I'd like it to be - "what do you say" sounds a bit like "zey" at 0:42, "out there" as "der" at 0:46.

But other than some minor nits that no one other than me cares about, you're done a really outstanding job with this. smile

Noel, this is a terrific song! Love the band and arrangement, too!, and the mix is splendid Very impressive vocal synth results, with some surprisingly effective nuances. I'd venture that you could sing this better, but that wasn't the point. The gap between human and vocaloid is certainly shrinking. Love your tune!

Noel,

Thank you ever so, so much for that wonderful and thorough explanation about how to get Synth V voices to rap/talk. I didn't expect such a clear and very detailed explanation; nor did I realise just how much work you put into it, in order to get it to your liking. Again, thanks for going through all that effort in explaining it to me; I now have clear indications, as well as food for thought, on how to approach things if I want to write a spoken song for one of my own Synth V singers! A particular salient point, I thought, was your comparison of how English works, compared to languages such as French, etc. . smile

God bless you, and please, please, keep writing. You honestly make people (or, at least, me!) happier in (and with) life, with your songs (which, I must also say, are meticulously and so well crafted, from a technical point of view, also - in my view). What greater gift is there? I say this because people simply don't say these things. "Stiff upper lip", and all that ... and they save it for when we're no longer here, etc. . I just wanted to say it now smile

Hey David!

Thanks for reminding me about the word "swell". It was never used all that much in Australia but takes me back in time just to read it smile And thanks for the visit! It's always great to see you. I appreciate that you had time to have a listen.

All the very best!

Hi Herb.

Thanks for passing through the thread. And thanks heaps for listening and commenting. I don't know if I've ever told you this, but it was listening to one of your songs where you used Synth V that got me started with the software. I'm so glad that I stumbled across that song because this vocal synthesizer is amazing. The updated version is excellent. I love the ability to drag the volume of vowels and consonants up/down and to drag their timing left and right. This really streamlines the creation of a good vocal.

Thanks again for taking the time!
