Medieval Inn Jam Session

Circa mid 1300's: A man carrying a small drum enters a medieval inn and notices a number of instruments laying on the tables. After a couple of pints of godale he starts pounding his drum. Quickly a tambourine accompany him followed by a lute and dulcimer. Soon a flute joins the group followed by a hurdy gurdy. Then a welch (as a servant was called back then) sang a few notes. Then the knights of the square table started pounding their tankards on the table, soon to be followed by many others. Most were almost in time with the drummer. Note that the hurdy gurdy player loved his godal and had to stop a few times to take a drink. Note that I am way out of my comfort zone on this one.

Calm Lake MIDI 6-8 Ctry Ballad
Tempo - 50 BPM
Piano - Eastwest's Hollywood Fantasy Orchestra (EHFO) - Strings - Lute
Guitar - EHFO - Strings - Dulcimer
Utility - Kontakt - Hurdy Gurdy - I took the root note only from the Utility track and used it as the hurdy gurd drone and in sections via my keyboard controller I played a lead over it.
I am playing the following EHFO's instruments via my keyboard controller:
1-drums - Bodram
2-winds - flute
3-voices - solo voice
and via Kontakt the tambourine

As always all comments are welcomed.

If you are interested on how this came about keep reading.
I DLed a Kontakt Hurdy Gurdy and was looking for a style to use it in. After many different tries I choose Calm Lake MIDI 6-8 Ctry Ballad but I couldn't find any of my patches that would fit a medieval period.

I have been drooling over the Eastwest's Hollywood Fantasy Orchestra since it first came out as many of its sounds I could use in my ambient/new age songs. However it is expensive and I had not saved enough money to purchase it. My wife asked how is the song coming I told her about the problems. She said here is the rest of the money go buy that orchestra. The rest is history.

PS - Yes she is a keeper and I have kept her for about 61 years now, i.e. 3 years dating and 58 years of marriage.

I get most of my exercise these days from shaking my head in disbelief.

When there was still live music at the Irish pub down the street, small bands would play that kind of music, and even though it's the opposite of what I normally do, I really like that kind of music.
Enjoyed my listen.
A lot.

PS: 61 years? Man, when you two started dating, I wasn't even born yet shocked

Thanx Bob. I like to push the BiaB boundaries. I didn't think BiaB could pull this off but those experts at PGM fooled me again. However it did take a long time finding a style that would work.

Thanx Ron. I really did push the limits of BiaB on this one.

PS - even Google Translate didn't help me with Chay's response shocked

LOL I'll second that nomination. Mario, this was one of your more bizarre pieces, but as usual, you know how to set a scene and create worlds in the minds of your listeners. I actually listened to it yesterday, but didn't have time to comment. I can't help but wonder how this would sound if accompanied by some modern twists. Or how parts of it could be used in other numbers...not sure what I'm getting at...just sensing a potential.

A drum circle like jam with other instruments. You have a wonderfully creative mind, Mario, and I'm so glad we get to hear it. Wow, man, when you came up with this cool idea, what were you smoking? Perfectly executed and it makes me wish I lived back then. Until I remember the history. You definitely brought out the best of times. Well played.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Thanx Beth. Actually you are a mind reader because I purchased the Fantasy Orchestra so I could add some of those sounds to my ambient and new age songs. Much like medieval sounds meet MI, i.e. Mario's Instruments smile

Thanx Marty. I smoke nothing. These idea come naturally because my brain is a half a bubble off center.
Sometimes I like to push BiaB outside its country/jazz/blues/etc circle. It took me quite awhile to find a style that would match my idea for this song. I though I might never find one but those experts at PGM proved me wrong!

We are watching a Great Courses lecture series on the Medieval period.
I think one of the upcoming lectures is on music ... so now we are prepped!

"These ideas come naturally because my brain is a half a bubble off center."
Dunno if you are better off for it but we are when it brings us productions like this to listen to. smile

Folks our ages are healthier in many ways when we keep the wheels turning by exploring new avenues.
We do that also but not on your scale. Wow!

What a cool choice of tracks that are well performed and mixed. And THAT backstory!
Glad that "keeper" enabled this.

Enjoyed it,

J&B

Thanx David. As far as I know yes that is a Medieval Jam-Inn Session. I say as far as I know because the Medieval period was a few years before I was born.

This is very historic!

I tried to keep up with the hurdy gurdy player but I passed out. When I woke up they were still playing.

Nice!!
