Rock Til Ya Drop


Here's something a little different from me. This is a Symphonic Rock guitar piece. It started out as something totally different, but I accidentally punched in the wrong Style Set. I thought "Whoa - this is pretty cool!" And with about an hour's rework, this is where it ended up and I kinda liked it.

Just to let you know - it's pretty loud! But, isn't that indigenous to most rock music?

Most of my "extra" effort on this one has to do with those quirky little guitar runs at the end of each verse and chorus. Instead of getting the one extra loud note or chord (with the ...d), I threw in a quirky, short, transition run. I think it works. Let me know what you think.

My next 8 or 10 songs, or thereabouts, will be all over the place as far as genre and style. About a month after Di passed, I lost myself in BIAB for almost a month, and just blindly clicked onto anything and worked with whatever came up. It's been part of my process to cope. And it truly has helped. PG Music has no idea of how instrumental they been in my grieving process - it has been an important part of it. So, many thanks to Peter and his great staff.

Some of the songs might be a little rough as far as "polishing the mess", but it's what came to me at the time. I simply left them as they were, as they exemplified my emotions at that time. Some of them have less than an hour devoted to them. This particular song has about 4 hours devoted to it.

Alan, smokin' tune! Everything sounds great. The soloist is of course the feature, but I found myself fascinated by the bass player and where you placed the bass in the mix. Though it's a genre bend for you, you've still composed what sounds like a real band playing a real tune. Super job!

You are very kind. Thank you. And yeah, I think that lead player over in the corner sweating and cussing. I might give him a raise - maybe double what I'm paying him now.

And yes, we are so lucky to have the many powerful tools BIAB gives us anytime we choose. It has a made a difference, not only in my music production, but in my life. I'll tell you what it has meant more to me than anything - It gave me the chance to bring Di's incredible vocals to life. It literally changed her world. That means more to me than anything else. She deserved an audience. You wonderful folks are the best audience she could have hoped for.

Alan, I've been trying to improve my mixes, and one of the main things I've done toward that end is to listen to your tracks. By everyone's comments here, you are the gold standard. So that's how I'm trying to learn. I appreciate the free lessons! (g)

You'd never guess, but I like rock instrumentals! laugh This works fine, though I'd have had at least 2 solo instruments in for variation.

Thanks so much, Bob. It's not the typical style of music I usually put together, but it was something a little different that I thought I would finish when I got there by accidentally clicking on the wrong Style set. With a little polishing, I think it turned out OK. Glad you liked it.Thanks again.

Hi Ron,

Glad to hear it works for you. I was thinking the same thing about the bass line, particularly as it went into the chorus. But it smokes throughout the whole piece.

I changed almost all the instruments from the original line-up in the style set. I kept the bass and the piano Everything else is what I found elsewhere and brought in. It seems to have worked out pretty good.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for dropping in for a listen. As far as me being the "Gold Standard", well, maybe, but I wouldn't bet my last dollar on it. But i do OK, I think No charge for the lessons! Your visit is marked as "account paid"!

I don't really have any secrets. My recording process is older than Neanderthal. I also do not read or write notation, nor do I know music theory in the sense that is normally defined as such. I have a personal system that works for me, but it's far from formal theory.

I use my ears and my gut feeling to arrive at a finished product.

This one thing I'm about to say can put the consummate musician into apoplexy: I am not a perfectionist. I'm almost 80 years old and have been playing and composing music since 1963. I learned a few things over that span of time.

1. Nobody is perfect.

2. Make your goal to create a musical piece that equals the top shelf of your skillset.

3. Spending hours upon hours striving for perfection usually ends up as a great waste of time. For practical purposes, perfection is unobtainable. You can often do more damage to a creation by spending hours upon hours seeking that one thing that is probably out of reach, and by doing so, you can do more damage than good to musical creation.

4. Know and respect the limits of your ability/skillset. This is my approach to that: I'm still a pretty good guitarist, just but no longer clean enough for recording because of a disease I have that affects my hand (focal dystonia). That has limited my skillset. I accept that. So, after I've played a new song 20 or so times and it gets no better, I let it go for a few days and then come back to it. After a dozen or so attempts it's still no better, I know I've done the best i can do. Even though I might want to have done some a little more impressive or, i accept it's not in the picture. I'm good with that as I know I did the best I could possibly do. When I do my best, I'm satisfied.Bjut don't confuse that with learning to do more things (new chords, new progressions, new percussions, new inversions, et.). Just keend in mind that all these new things we learn have to fall within our skillset. But learning new things is always good. We just have to keep in mind, as time and experience reveal, those new thing we learn also have ceilings. I accept that.

5. By continuously trying to exceed our capabilities, we become frustrated and that can interfere with the quality of what we are trying to create.


There is more, but those are the basic parameters i work within. Basically, I don't lie to myself, and I embrace the limits of my abilities and work within them. As I said earlier, that doesn't mean not learning new things - we should always try to learn every new facet of our trade - we just need to accept they, too, peak levels of attainment.

Sorry about the long rant, but I thought I would share some of the basic principles of my approach. Mixing has its own subset of parameters I use I can PM you with more about that if you'd like.

I slogged through all that stuff above so whomever might read this understands a little bit of my approach to music creation - the physical aspects, rather my mental approach.

You are very kind with your words. Thank you. Music, in conjunction with grandfather's sage advice, has been the driving force in my life. Music is my refuge when storm clouds hover. PG Music has made that possible far beyond my wildest dreams. Since Di's death, I have 38 songs in various stages of completion. There are 4 or 5 I'm going to let go, but I plan on finishing the others. I've written two about her passing that are worth finishing. Several others are more exercises in self-absorption

I agree that we are still here for whatever purpose He has for us.

I'm delighted you enjoyed this piece. I have only four hours devoted to it. But that's pretty typical for me.

The feeling of considering you to be a good friend and musician is mutual. I have a lot of respect for your talent and personality.

Yup, not intrusive at all. Sometimes, clicking on the wrong BIAB style gets some surprising results. I also find this to be true when I add some wrong notes when playing the piano. Good results all over on this one.

Hi Alan.

Even though I was suspecting something rocky because the title, you still managed to surprise me. This is fantastic. I second floyd's comment about you being a BIAB master! Earlier this year, I tried to write and produce a rock song. I don't think it was a failed experiment but I was so far out of my comfort zone that I really had no idea what I was doing. My basic approach was to keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best. It is clear from your song, though, that you did not use the "fingers crossed" technique. Everything that you've done sits very comfortably in its place and, as a whole, the final sound is full of energy and attitude (just like rock is supposed to be, so they tell me). I really, really loved the experience of listening to this track smile

Alan, a fantastic rock, guitar solo song. In fact I think this is the first shredding guitar solo song I have ever heard on these forums. Outstanding choice of RTs and as usual mixed just perfectly.
