This was a surprize, didn't see this coming. Will have to do some more listening to the demo to see if this is a sound I would want.

Yes, Doctor Dan it is a thing. Please let me know if it sounds anything like a real 12 bass:

That has a cool sound but I'm not sure it would be useful for all genres. Definitely rocks in a solo.

It probably requires a bank loan to change the strings.

This helped me:

Quote
12 String bass tuned by doubling each standard E-A-D-G bass string with two smaller-gauge strings tuned to the same note and one octave higher, resulting in courses of eeE, aaA, ddD, and ggG. This creates a thick, shimmering sound because the two higher-octave strings will naturally be slightly out of tune with each other. The natural slight detuning between the two higher-octave strings in each course creates a chorus-like sound that is central to the 12-string bass's unique tone.

Looks like it will cost me $89 to see if I really have a place for this in my music frown. Not likely at this current time. grin

I agree in that it may have a limited choice of music genres where it would fit.
Guitar strings for a 4 string bass runs between $20 to $50 USD. 12 string bass guitar strings cost around $50 USD so the cost isn't to expensive.

OK, now I get it! To be honest the 80's and 90's were not a real good time for me and music. Raising 4 kids and working consumed my time. On top of that I was more a jazz guitar guy so I didn't pay a lot of attention to rock bass. But I can certainly appreciate the cool factor.

Good timing. I have most of Toontrack's EZBass instruments, but was going to pass on their new 12-string bass expansion. I think I'll grab it now.

In a rock band I was in, the one that almost made it, I played sax but doubled on bass, drums, rhythm guitars, and keyboard.

That band broke up, I went through a few more, and during the psychedelic era, when nobody wanted to hire a sax player, I gigged playing bass. I found it to be a very rewarding instrument. Much more fun than rhythm guitar in the realm of creativeness. At least for me.

I wouldn't want the 12 string beast though, it might be right for others, but not me.

I have played actual 8 and 12 string basses. Fun toys but I had no use for them then; still don’t.
