Glary Soft has identified about 27.91GB of duplicate files in my laptop with new BIAB install. A number of them seem to be "Direct Input" versions of the same files.

For example: C:\bb\RealTracks\Direct Input\Guitar, Electric, Rhythm PopMotionHeldHiGrit ev 100 Direct Input alongside C:\bb\RealTracks\Guitar, Electric, Rhythm PopMotionHeldHiGrit ev 100

Are these duplicate files necessary? I'm trying to figure out why my brand new laptop is so full. 19.4GB free of 475GB.

If you are not interested in Direct Input RealTracks at all, you could delete those files if you want. These are mainly the DI versions of electric and bass guitars (no amplification). So they are not duplicate files, they just have the same base filename. Band-in-a-Box runs fine without the DI versions present if you wanted to go that route. However a fully complete UltraPAK (with no .wav or .flac RealTracks or Drums) is "only" around 200 GB so there may be something else taking up space..

No .wav or .flac files? Are those unnecessary? How can I be sure which files are unnecessary, to be deleted?

Wav and/or flac files (for the RealTracks and Drums) would be present in an Audiophile version. I wasn't stating that the files are unnecessary, I was just saying about how large a complete (non-Audiophile) bb folder is for reference.

So, if I haven't purchased the Audiophile version, do I have any use for those files?

I have a BiaB install on two machines. On the laptop, which has limited storage and I use only for practice, don't need high audio quality, I omitted all .wav and .flac files from the RealTracks and Drums folders. BiaB runs as normal for a non-audiophile version on the .wma files that remain. That saves a lot of storage space.

I haven't removed/omitted any .wav or .flac files from anywhere else.

Not necessarily.

Unless I missed something, your question is theoretical since you did not say you have any .WAV or .FLAC files.

If you did not purchase the Audiophile Windows version, then you received only .WMA files. You should not have any .FLAC or .WAV files anyway.

If you purchased one of the extra paks and PG Music sent you the audiophile version of that pak, perhaps in error, then you would have some .WAV files before 2025, and .FLAC files from 2025 and 2026. Compared to the enormous size of files from 2009 until 2024, this would hardly be worth worrying about.

BIAB will use the audiophile quality files if you have any. The order it searches is .WAV, then .FLAC, then .WMA.

So, if you actually have any .WAV or .FLAC files, keep them because they will sound a little better. If you are desperate for space, then you could delete any .WMA files in folders where you ALSO have a corresponding .WAV or .FLAC file. It's totally not worth doing this, though. If you decide to go ahead, make a backup first, or better, buy a bigger portable USB SSD drive for your collection of RealTracks and RealDrums.

Great answer. Very helpful. It's a brand new laptop, but I thought it included an SSD drive built in, but I'm not sure how that work works as of yet.

Matt, the Playable RealTrack sounds are flac. I believe some of the Sforzando sounds are too.

Some flac files were also included in the 2026 49 PAK.

Oh, that's good additional info; thanks Jim.

Would it only be for BIAB 2025 and 2026 that there are .FLAC files for Playable RealTracks and for Sforzando sounds?

Yes also about the 49-Pak. I mentioned the possibility of extra paks. But are you saying the 49-pak that you get from PG Music is the same version for 'regular' and for Audiophile versions? In other words, this could be how a non-Audiophile owner could have some .FLAC files? It's a distinct possibility, but I don't think we know that answer yet. Do you?

I assumed when I order the 49- and other paks with my annual BIAB program upgrade, I get the Audiophile versions of those, too. But if I ordered the paks at another time, would PG Music check first to see what I have?

The 2026 49 PAK included some flac files but I don't think earlier PAKs did.

As far as I know there is no PAK distinction regarding if you have Audiophile or not. I don't have an Audiophile edition.

The 49 PAK is sold only during the new release sale.

Thanks again. I did not realize the 49-PAK is sold only at the new release. Thinking back, I'm sure you are correct.

I believe we also agree that versions before 2025 wouldn't contain .FLAC files because the program wasn't set up to handle them, at least that we were told.

There actually is a PAK distinction, although I couldn't give advice on which PAKs. I have been in touch with Andrew when one was shipped to me in the past. I can't give more detail here but it is the reason I keep requesting a utility or menu option that would tell me what kind of mix I have between WAV, FLAC, and WMA so I could eliminate what I don't need and order what I may be missing.
