"The Parting Glass" is a Scottish traditional song, often sung at the end of a gathering of friends. The earliest tentative evidence for the existence of the text is from the Skene Manuscript, a collection of Scottish airs written in tablature for the lute and mandora at various dates between 1615 and 1635, as a different (though distantly-related) tune bearing the name Good Night, and God Be With Yow.
In my R&B-version I sing and play plectrum banjo and guitars.
I produced this at my home with Band in a Box and Reaper.

Hi Esa!

Never heard this before, and interesting background on the song. It had a more modern chord progression feel to it, with a traditional melody over the top.

What an interesting idea that they would sing a song together before parting - something about community ways back in olden times which must have been very preserving and good for mental health. I guess that’s what they did before Netflix! In some ways, I would long for those times - without the danger, food insecurity and high mortality.

Good song, and thanks for bringing it to us.

Your welcome. I have often also felt this song as a farewell of an old man leaving his friend for the last time when it's time for the final curtain.

Arri, super job updating this traditional tune (that I don't know) into a contemporary reference. Makes it very accessible for modern audiences without losing the power of the song. And it's very powerful indeed. Love your vocals and banjo solo. Very nice ending, too.

Thank you, Ron - or like we often answer in Finland to boasts: good, that it passed.

Hullo Brno. I sing this myself at local venues occasionally.
Interesting to hear this with a sort of marching rhythm.

Thanks. I learned this song from The Dubliners, but produced very different version with an old R&B sound and rhythm.

I too learned it from that group.
My band toured Ireland with them in the 1960's.
With their knowledge of the local bars it's amazing how we ever got to the gigs.
Fine times.

Ari, I have never heard this song before so I can not compare your version to any other however your version is outstanding. Great backing band, arrangement, and super vocal.
Great mix
This is one of if not your best to date.

I arrived early to a restaurant.
The manager asks, "do you mind waiting a bit?"
I said no.
"Good", he said. "Take these drinks to table 3"

Hi, Arri.

Nice cover! I've heard this before, but your version is a slightly different take. smile

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Thanks. Vic: I was the front of house sound engineer for the The Dubliners, when they had a concert in Helsinki, Finland. One of the band had drunk too much strong Finnish beer and I had to keep his mic down - only put him into his floor monitor for him. Still they sounded good and could play their sets without no one noticing anything special in the audience - despite that one new comer of the band who hardle could stand on his stool. Great guys all. Real Irish spelmen.

I heard the Kilkennys place this when I was in Ireland, although I think the melody was a little different. Awesome production. I like you guitar and banjo playing.

Thanks. My arrangement is quite different from the standard folk style. Maybe that's why the melody may sound different, although it's the same, taken from Folksongs & Ballads Popular in Ireland Volume 2. But these folk songs are sung mostly according to what the singer like and memories so versions are many.

Very cool song. Loved the back story on the tune. I would be cool to imaging someone from the 1600 to be able to hear your version of the song. Really something when a song can transcend centuries.

Thanks, Scott. My one purpose producing song is to feature trads and old forgotten treasures, when they're finaly on public domain free to version.
