Any recommendations for brands and models, pros and cons for headphones for use in monitoring my mixes when not using speakers. Would prefer to stay under $100. Thanks as always, Carkins

I also like ATH-M40fs , very cost efficient. I do not like the 'better' models from the same company (ie priced higher) as they color the sound. These are pretty representative when compared to a coule sets of nearfields I own, and the price caused me to get a second pair. I just hope they continue making these!

Look for cans made by microphone mfrs, i.e., AKG, beyerdynamic, Sennheiser, Sony. You can find some decent stuff for around a centibuck. See if you can find anything that calls itself a reference headphone. Anything else is likely to be 'ear candy.'
My personal recommendation is out of your stated price range, but worth investigating. beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro. Sell for $200 most places, can be found for $150 if you look around. Incredibly flat, wide-range, comfortable reference phones with a huge dynamic range. I've had mine since the mid 1990s. I use them daily in my medical transcription work, then take them into the studio.

For that budget, I like Grado open headphones, or what I use, an Allesandro One, which is a modified Grado. They are a little over $100. Great sound and very comfortable for long sessions.
However, these are open headphones that allow sound transmission in and out, so if you are trying not to disturb others, or have outside noise, get a closed style headphone. For that, I like the SONY 7506, also a little over $100.

I've always read Grados color the sound a bit and were not good mixing phones. Can't speak for the modified version Matt mentions

+1 for Allesandro. I got the Music Series entry model for $99 and replaced the cushions with modified Sennheiser 414 ($3) and love em. I don't know if they are any good for mixing because I don't know if my mixes are any good anyway.

I purchased the ATH-M40fs Here: No connection just happy customer....Have purchased some good Samson Q7 Gig Mikes here also. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/97...io_Monitor.htmlThere were recommended by folks here. Am so happy with them comfort and sound. They are flat or dry but really do produce what is presented too them I recommended to folks on another forum with tip "They were Studio Headphones" One of the folks I knew quite well purchased them... then returned them. The flat/dry nature of them are not what he wanted. Don't have the trained ear of lot of you folks, still learning, but do believe, considering their price are exceptional. Also I learned in the process difference between headphones and "Studio" headphones. later, Seeker

That's why I like them; they are pretty honest. Real honest for the price.

Hi Carkins, I have that ATH-M30 Professional headphones. These were recommended by a Nashsville producer whose seminars I've been to. They're excellent headphones. What I hear on them is nearly identical to what I hear on my speakers. They don't "dress-up" the sound in any way. ATH-M30 Headphones linkI bought them in the US. With postage, they were still around 50% cheaper than here in Australia. Regards, Noel

Thanks for the input. I'm thinking I'll try the ATH-M40's to replace my old Koss UR-15C's which sound a little bass heavy to me. They get really good reviews. Only $52.49 at Amazon, well within my budget. Carkins

You'll be very happy with these. They have been around for awhile. I want to say mine are 10 years old. On my second set of ear pads.
