Hi All,
Using BB today and inputting chords for a song and after generating and auditioning the song, there is a severe crackling/distortion noise being heard.

I had this once before but for the life of me,can't remember what I did to resolve the issue.

I have tried changing the audio interface, I have two,and the sample rates but that doesn't work.

If I change from ASIO to MME it plays OK, so the problem seems to be ASIO.

Any ideas guys please?

Al

If the Presonus can support ASIO drivers, use them. You might need to adjust the latency settings and the buffers. Increase the buffers size and then play around to get the best playback. You don't want the buffers too big or too small. As with the latency settings, buffers have an optimal size that works the best. Find that optimal size, then save those settings as the default.

Also, if using ASIO, be sure the program you want to have use the ASIO driver is opened and started FIRST. ASIO only supports one thing at a time. First come, first served.

In addition to what Herb said, it also sometimes helps to close and restart BIAB after changing settings for the changes to take effect.

"You might need to adjust the latency settings and the buffers."

Spot on GuitarHacker.

I changed the buffer size from 256 to 512 and all is OK now.

Would just like to know why it has happened in the first place, as the buffer has always been set to 256.

My audio interface does this occasionally (and it's probably the buffers, as well); however, I've found that if I just go back in and just reselect the same ASIO driver, it clears it out and everything works again. Sometimes, I have to choose a different driver, then just come back to the original driver. But then all is clean again. That way I can keep my latency low, even though occasionally I need to do that reset.

Al, different programs present different 'loads' to the digital audio system. They give you the ability to adjust buffers not only for the initial setup, but continuing adjustments. Melodyne requires me to change buffers every time, for example, and then I change back.

Something else not yet mentioned is, simply rebooting often clears this up. More subtle, check for other programs running in the background by using the free utility, Latency Monitor. In such cases, a system could work fine but suddenly give audio crackles if the wrong thing is also running. A simple but common occurance is wireless network activity, or auto downloads of software updates. Virus checkers, print monitors - stuff like that. Wireless mouse activity. The list is endless, and programs are cumulative in using resources (hence, reboot frequently).

And, I've done John's great tip of changing and changing back. I attribute that to Windows updates thinking they know my system better than I do, but that's just an arrogant guess.

Very good. Yeah, it just needed time to breathe and think.

I've read quite a bit about latency lately and all I can say is wow, it's a very complex subject. We mostly think it's just the settings but oh no. It can be way more than that. Latency can change depending on what else the computer is doing at any point in time. It's also why we always say to get the most powerful system you can afford because when it comes to latency bigger and stronger is definitely better.

I just bought used a PC with an Intel 4770 chip, 16 gigs of ram and a 256K SSD. I won't have time to set it up until after April 18 but it makes my current system seem like something out of the stone age.

There's a very good video on YT about why shopping for a CPU alone based on just the spec's has absolutely nothing to do with a system's overall latency or performance when it comes to digital audio. Real time digital audio is pretty much the worst thing you can ask your system to do. It's even worse than video rendering which was a surprise to me.

Also someone mentioned that ASIO is a one trick pony, first come first served etc. That's only with PG products. ASIO 2.0 has been out for years and it's multi host.

Glad to hear ASIO 2.0 has fixed the shortcomings with ASIO.

Any time someone is serious about their music, they will generally find a way to get a good computer and set it up as a dedicated music machine.

My last 2 computers used for music are dedicated to music. In fact, my current studio DAW isn't on line, has no AV software, and never gets updates to any of the programs on it. As a result, it still runs as solidly as the day I built it and installed the software on it. Yup, it's only XP pro 32 and 4 Gigs of memory, but I've never seen it choke running any of the projects I have worked on over the years including the ones with multiple instances of Melodyne, Ozone and Kontakt all running at the same time with multiple audio tracks and their associated plugs and busses.

Your computer doesn't have to be state of the art to be rock solid and to do a good job for most hobbyist's needs.
