I am looking for a simple way to convert and mp4 video into mp3 only, or extract the audio from an mp4 to make an mp3.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a program that could possibly batch convert these?

Free would be great, but isn't absolutely necessary.

Thanks.

Hi, I understand Audacity will do it https://mikebeach.org/2012/11/26/convert-a-video-to-an-audio-file-using-audacity/ is an article. Audacity is free and a good handy audio editing program you will find heaps of uses for.

Most free or cheap wav editors will do that. Here’s a free on line converter. I haven’t vetted it.

Google it. There are dozens of utilities out there to do this.

I believe RealBand can do it too

Oh, just saw the part about batch processing.. I don't think RB does that. But it will load a single MP4 and then you can export it as MP3 or WAV or whatever other formats are supported by RB

Yeah..that's where I started. I'm just not a big believer in d/ling a bunch of utilities from sources I don't know. Tis the reason I'm asking here. To find one, isn't hard. To find something I trust, MUCH harder.

Thanks Pat! I wouldn't have thought to even try that. You are right about the batch conversion part, but it's still good to know of this feature. I'm ALWAYS learning.

Thanks!

Thing is that moist of us have tools that we have had for a long time and haven't had to deal with this in a while. I use Adobe Audition, but it is not free.

I tested it this morning and Audacity does in fact open an MP4 file as audio. I had always used a more complex way to extract audio from an MP4 in Audacity. I learned something new. Thanks for posting this.

I use Fre:Ac

https://www.freac.org/

It's excellent open-source software and will do batch conversions. It also offers a great deal of control over the quality of the final product.

Someone else said - but Audacity is a safe bet for doing this. Fre:Ac is supposedly good, but I've never used it myself.

You might want to check out 5KPlayer it's free and it's available for both Windows and Mac. As mentioned in the article below it can convert video to AAC/MP3 files and extract audio tracks. Here is some more info on how you can manage it: https://www.1and1.com/digitalguide/online-marketing/online-sales/the-best-alternatives-to-the-vlc-media-player/

RB can Batch convert MP4's to MP3's. Open the Batch Convert and MP4 is a selection in the Input drop down menu.

And just for sake of discussion/accuracy, since MP4 is video and you want the audio, technically you want a RIPPER, something that extracts the audio from a video. You aren't really converting the MP4. You are dissecting it.

Me being nitpicky for the continued sake of discussion and accuracy, I believe HTL is accurate in his question as he wants to extract audio and convert that audio to the MP3 format. However, according to Thesaurus.com, dissect is not on their list as a recommended synonym for extract.... I could be wrong..... ;=)

However, RB appears to fulfill his request for a 'free' alternative to batch convert files even though he technically had to initially pay for it but it's listed as included for 'free' with his BIAB purchase....

Again ;o)

Adobe Audition will do it. VLC will do it. Almost any video editor will do it.

I use Any Video Converter. Free download. Works great to download Youtube, Twitter, Facebook... almost any mp4. And once you have downloaded it, you just select MP3 under the CONVERT options and it will rip the audio.

And I stand by "ripping", as in "tearing something away". But whatever.
