I'm in Wisconsin; and seeing Eddie's post about Ohio, I have to say I get while people live down South. Normally, winters don't bother me very much; but this one got really bad fast.

On top of that, people are driving so poorly. We had a HUGE pile up near me yesterday. I've never seen a pile up like this.

We're in the process of moving, so maybe just keep heading south. wink

So...who's up for a visitor. lol J/K

Near me, if you want to see 'white' stuff it's sand and not snow. Also, would love to meet you in person one day.

My sister lives on the Minnesota side across from Lacrosse, WI. The winter has been very bad up North this year. It seems like every week there's another foot of snow. I keep telling her to move down here to St. Louis since our winters are a lot more mild. Our family is originally from NW IL.

The Piedmont Triad (Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point) experiences the four seasons but rarely the weather extremes.

However, I can't say much about driving skills. I would be terrified to learn how to drive today. Just the sheer volume of traffic doesn't leave much room for error. Add in other factors like poorly maintained infrastructure, inexperience and distracted driving and the roadway seems to be a far more dangerous place to be than it use to be. The good news is vehicles are built to absorb much of the punishment. Personally I can't wait for autonomous vehicles to be commonplace and normal as I enjoy riding much more than driving.

Lower Michigan has had much less 'white stuff' than normal, but instead has been getting a periodic warm up, rain, then drop in temps to where it freezes (repeatedly).
Ice is much more worse than normal lately and thus driving conditions also. I kinda think Wisconsin and Illinois have seen much the same.

I'd actually enjoy a steady 26 degree large dumping of snow (I can snow blow that!).
It's when it rains all night (on top of snow) and then temps drop near dawn and all that wet is no longer water, but quite a bit more stiff .. been a weird winter indeed.

Last 24 hours here it's been 40-60 mph winds .. so what loose snow exists is blowing back over what just got salted and melted.
Few more weeks of winter and hopefully things become more manageable.

I'll probably be complaining about the heat 6 months from now.
I lived in the far south for a few years, and couldn't take the relentless heat and lack of seasons, so I try to appreciate it all, within reason.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

my sister and her family are in Rochester Minnesota, and they just posted a bunch of "look how much it snowed last night" photos to facebook. I replied with photos of the blooming daffodils in my yard. (I have "evil brother syndrome", a rare disease in which only those around me suffer.) ;-)

If you happen to travel through NC, you are always welcome here my friend! Just let me know in advance when you're coming because otherwise I might not be home.

while we're on the topic of winter weather, I have a story:

I think it was the winter of 1978. I still lived in Pennsylvania at the time. We had one of those storms Rharv mentioned, in which we got deep snow, then rain, then deep freezing temperatures that made the entire world like porcelain, only slippery. The ice on top of the snow was thick enough that an adult male's weight was insufficient to break through the crust.

Then it got windy.

A guest came to visit us. Our house was on a hill, and at that time the path to the front door was gravel not steps.

Our guest (who was on the roly-poly side) slipped on the ice and blew across the yard like a tumbleweed. Three times. Funniest thing I ever saw. We finally had to throw her a rope.

So... whatever kind of day you're having today, think about this story and feel happy in the knowledge that your day is better than this.

The weather for Victoria got pretty bad here a couple weeks back. It's normally pretty temperate here so it's not typically concerned, but folks really aren't prepared for snow when it does happen the off time.

Here in NC "brutal cold" is anything below 27 degrees. In the teens is just beyond words to describe.

Drivers.... no one down here apparently, knows how to drive on snow. Throw in some ice and it gets real bad, real quick.
