Question about MIDI continuous controllers 100, 101, and 6
A customer sent me a couple of MIDI files that he made with my styles. He wanted to know if he owed me any royalties if he fleshed them out and made a recording of it. I told him my styles are tools, and anything you make with my styles is royalty free as long as you don't give the style itself away.
He's from France, his English is minimal, my French is even less so I thought I'd ask here instead of asking him.
In the beginning of each song are the usual assignments pitch bend, cc 7 (track volume) cc11 (expression), cc10 (pan), cc64 (sustain pedal) and so on.
Looking at his file I see these in sequence
cc 100=0
cc 101=1 (in another file cc 101=2)
cc 6=64
Now I know that if both cc100=0 and 101=0 and they are followed by cc6 the cc6 denotes pitch bend range
But what if cc101 = 1 or 2?
I'm hoping to learn something here (I googled and failed)

Bob, these are Registered Parameter Numbers (RPN), a term I didn't know, but actually saw on the MIDI CC table on your web site. Check out these two links to see if this helps. Basically, RPN's are generic settings (101 and 100) and NRPN's (non-registered - 99 and 98) are device specific settings. The 101/100 determine what you are trying accomplish: The current MIDI standard only specifies five RPNs (numbers are shown in decimal with the MSB, CC101, first): they are Pitch Bend Sensitivity (0, 0), Fine Tuning (0, 1), Coarse Tuning (0, 2), Tuning Program Select (0, 3), and Tuning Bank Select (0, 4). Another number is in widespread use: Null (127, 127), which, very usefully, cancels the active parameter number. This dummy RPN is occasionally called Reset RPN, and it does not require a Data Entry message for parameter value.
