I usually use the key of C to count notes with when trying to "find" the note I want in a different key. I count the number of notes in C (From C note to desired note) and then apply that number to the key I am actually in. There are 12 notes in a scale, btw. Once you have determined the correct note in C, start with the actual key the song is in (EX: G) and start counting from the key note (G) to arrive at the note you need. It will be the same number of notes from G as it was in C.
