Even though we write music for ourselves first and foremost, I found this interesting. some phrases that stood out of the schmarm:
"we champion the independent artist... we would NEVER screw you over!"
(translation: yeah, right. Stevie Wonder will testify to that)
"Creative people are notoriously bad business people"
(translation: they'll sign bad contracts in a heartbeat)
"If we make you an offer and you take too long to accept it, we'll probably just move on."
(translation: there are plenty of hungry artists, and if you aren't willing to accept the first crummy offer we make, a thousand other losers are already lined up to take an even lower offer)

Music business, politics, finance industry, you name it, is managed and staffed by assholes who are full of their own importance, and stand out primarily by their failures. Who failed to sign the Beatles? An A+R manager, the list is endless. Music is a commodity being raped by the film, advertising, and whatever else type of industry. Jingles are wanted, not music, most of these guys wouldn't know good music if it p***sed on them. They are looking for repeat successes. Like banks, if your idea does't have a proven track record they won't finance you. Sad.

I wondered what sort of responses this would get. I thought there might be something positive said somewhere. Maybe someone who has had the luck of their music being picked up.
So do you think the lady needing the teeth job was on the level or am I too trusting of people? I do know I would hang up as well and I'd need to see and verify the contract.

I think this topic is a two-edged sword. There is plenty about the music business that is unscrupulous and offensive. There is little doubt in my mind that it is standard practice to pay as little as possible for music.
But I think the people were basically honest in saying there ARE opportunities to make SOME money. Their thinking is that the artist's expectations for compensation are unrealistic... and I thought the presentation was geared toward lowering the compensation expectations of the people who hope to sell them the rights to their music.
I see the series you posted as a reality check for people who want to market their songs. Bottom line is that you can make some spending money, but you won't get rich.. at best. At worst you can spin your wheels throwing time and money at a goal that will never yield a bit of financial compensation.
Each person needs to decide for him/herself how hard to work to make a few bucks
Somebody should write a "for dummies" book titled "How to hold your lips when you kiss their butt"

I agree with you Pat. I don't have any grand delusions about the music industry, I posted the link to see what reaction it would get from others here. I posted it on the Garritan forum as well and it was much the same response.
I write mainly educational piano music but I really like fiddling with video and music for my own enjoyment. Don't even get me started on VST plugins, I love mangling sound!
