see this thread for my personal experience of this infection last year.
To cut a long story short, I finished up installing an image backup of the infected pc.
There was a thread about this problem here, but I think it is no longer accessible. The dominant trend among the responses received was to try using non-Windows based virus removal tools.
If your experience is the same as mine (which it may well not be) you will also see something quite strange.
With no instances of Internet Explorer running, examine the processes tab in task manager. If you have two ‘phantom’ instances of iexplore.exe running, then it’s time to panic!

Pat you might want to try this free utility program called Rkill . The link page explains what it does but in short it's a tool that is easy to use and kills known processes that stop the use of our normal anti-malware applications. I once had some bad malware that disabled my virus protection and would not allow Malwarebytes to remove it. What Rkill did was shut down all process's that these malware programs use and then I was allowed to run malware bytes to remove it. Brian

thanks again to everybody who has replied. I'm expecting to see this again, as I can't imagine that what I did actually solved the problem. Marc, the symptom of phantom imstances of IE is a good bit of information to look for. Thanks for that. Brian, thanks for the tip on Rkill. I'll have it ready if the need arises. Tim, Please don't utter the phrase "reformat the computer". You're forcing me out of ostrich mode when you say that. It's blissful here with my head in the sand.

Pat, 'Twas me I'd DL the Kaspersky rescue Disc file to another computer. Then burn an ISO image. Makes it a bootable CD.Then on the infected machine isert the CD & power down.Then turn back on. when you power up set the boot order to the CD drive.Follow the very easy instructions. It'll first have you update the definitions.This is a Linux based CD so Windows will not have started. This is the only way to get rid of a real nasty. You have to keep Windows from starting. Kaspersky Rescue Disc

Try most recent version in safe mode.
