Wondered if this would be good for the Wishlist.

A Forum devoted just to user donated styles for those looking for something not found in BIAB or RB.
Also tips and videos for style creation or modification could go here to make it easier for those new to or not adept at this.

At face value, that's a great idea, Cark! I'm sure everybody would like to acquire more styles for free...

But people already trade the URLs of web locations where free styles can be found. Setting up a way to send files risks copyright infringement, and PGMusic has always made decisions that guard their legal interests where that is concerened. Its far easier to STAY out of questionable territory than it is to fight a legal battle once you're in it. And regarding a user driven forum, they would have all the liability but none of the control over what gets sent.

It would also be contrary to Notes Norton's best interest, since the most likely abuse would be the illegal trading of his styles. He has added so much to the forum and indeed, to the whole experience of using PGMusic products, it would be bad form to expose him to that kind of risk. As it stands now, I think there is a generally accepted respect for his intellectual property rights among forum users. But, the more convenient it becomes to break the rules, the more inclined good people are to step over the line. My vote would be not to create an incentive to steal. I know that's not your intent, but it could easily spiral out of the original intent and become something less desirable. Its better not to open up a pillow on a windy day than it is to try to regather 100% of the feathers after the unwise deed is done.

A forum dedicated to style making tips and tricks would be very cool though. I'd plus-one that idea in a heartbeat!

having said all that, it's already possible to ask for specific styles and have other forum members PM them to you. There's still some potential for abuse, but it's probably less than with a dedicated file trading forum.

At one time there was a BiaB file sharing group on Yahoo! and plenty of styles were shared, including PG Music styles from newer disks (to save people from the cost of upgrading), my styles, and copyrighted songs with melodies.

I was in the group to protect my own interests, and I would continuously have to ask the moderators to remove my styles. So they kicked me off the group.

This irritated me so I wrote them a nice letter explaining that I'm a cottage business, eking out a living the best I can (definitely not getting rich) and this potentially takes food off my table. No response.

So I wrote to Yahoo!, the Harry Fox Agency, ASCAP, and BMI and about 6 months later the group disappeared.

Software piracy hurts the little people much more than the big guys. Cottage industry people get to pick which 16 hours of the day to work, and get paid much less per hour than the average person. But we love what we are doing, love being independent and not some 'wage slave', and always carry the hope of 'making it big' and getting out of the rut.

I know that certain people don't respect my copyrights and trade my styles. I've sent cease and desist letters to a number of web sites posting my styles, and tracking them down in itself is very time consuming. Still I lose money on the pirate trade, but I can't help that, only try to minimize it.

A style sharing site would amplify the problem. It could become like the old Yahoo! group, in which the files made by me, PG Music, David Bailey, Roy Hawkesford, Sherry Mayrent, Jim Wedd, Chuck & Janice etc. would be pirated, taking food off our tables. If you do start one, please do unto others.

I agree with Pat and Notes. I have bought some of Notes' fake bookd disks and they have saved me lots of time for a very reasonable price. A few years ago, I was a member of a karaoke file sharing group. I got a virus from a file and it crashed my system to the point of having to reformat and start everything over. When the Yahoo group started, I was tempted to join, but didn't due to my bad experience with file sharing in the past.

I would be very interested in a styles section for discussion and idea sharing though. I think it would be popular and maybe could include some other products such as GPO, etc..

Just my 4 cents worth...

Stan

thanks for weighing in on the topic, Notes. Hearing what you've been through in the past is a real eye opener. I feel sure that nobody here, including Carkins, would want to put you in defense mode... especially in light of the ongoing contributions you make to the BIAB community. Not only your styles, but also the industry experience and your willingness to share midi tricks and tips all speak to your helpful attitude.

The story of the goose that laid the golden egg is a classic reference to what happens when somebody isn't satisfied with the current state of value adding and tries to get more. The end result is that the previous value adding ends, never to return, and the end state is worse than the beginning.

Well self interest or group interest.

If a forum here encouraged by pg music to discuss and work with styles is in the interest of the group then it will happen. The more people are able to use something the better it would be, except for...

And me. Lots of styles to keep me going as it is.

I can see it clearly now,

Working on a blues skies style.
