Well, I got a bit distracted from my goal of South African songs and ended up recording and doing a video of this classic Stephen Foster public domain song. I saw a version on Youtube by James Taylor and Yo Yo Ma and this inspired me on this interpretation.

Lyrics (as if you need them!)

Let us pause in life's pleasures and count its many tears
While we all sup sorrow with the poor
There's a song that will linger forever in our ears;
Oh, hard times come again no more
Chorus
'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary
Hard times, hard times come again no more
Many days we have lingered
Around my cabin door
Oh hard times come again no more

While we seek birth and beauty in music light and gay
There are frail forms waiting by the door
Though their voices are silent, their haunting looks will say;
Oh, hard times come again no more

'Tis a sigh that is wafted across the troubled wave
'Tis a will that is heard upon the shore
'Tis a dirge that is murmured around the lonely grave
Oh, hard times come again no more
