The Win 8.1 addition of the Start Button really didn't give you the Start Button you had on Win 7. It barely functions. I still use the third party app I mentioned above because it gives the full functionality that the Start Button in Win 7 did.

After Win95, every edition of Windows came out and hoards of people said it was inferior.

I recall when XP first came out reading dozens of posts saying "Keep your Win98SE, this XP is crap."

And so it will probably always go.

For some reason unknown to me, Microsoft likes to change some things for what seems to be for the sake of change, and not for function. New names for the same functions, new locations to look for them, and so on.

So IMO many of the people comfortable with the old system don't know where their old tools were, and since they changed the name, don't know how to find them.

And yes, it's a bit of a PITA to learn a different way to do the same old thing at the same time as the major PITA of installing all your software and moving all your data. So it's very easy to say the new OS stinks.

And yes, some Windows editions had bad reps from even the people who usually have no problem with a new OS. Win2000 and Vista seem to be the ones people hate most. I skipped both so I can't comment, but a minority of the posters had no problem with them.

And it's also human nature for the people having the hard time to gripe while the people who aren't just go about their business, so even the worst upgrades are probably not as bad as they seem if you only read the forums.

But still for me, it's a big PITA to re-install all my software on a new computer, move my data over, and at the same time learn the new way of doing all the old stuff. And that's why I hate to get a new computer.

It's not so much that it's the problem, it just seems like a waste of time. I have new songs to learn for the duo, phone calls to make to keep the duo working, new disks to make for Norton Music, run the day-to-day operations of Norton Music, and do one-nighters in the duo which could mean anywhere from a 7 hour day to a 10 hour day considering travel time, set up time, and the occasional wait for them to finish dinner before we play.

But in the long run, I'm usually happier when the change is complete.

Well said Bob. I also remember Win ME getting a bad reputation. I had gone from 98 to Win 2000 and had liked Win 2000.

By service pack 1, I think they all are pretty good.
