I have been using Band in the Box for quite some time now. I am considering switching to Real Band, but I am trying to get my head around how reral band might improve my work, on a conceptual level.
It comes down to this: If I have already created a song using Band in the Box, can I import that song intop Real Band, and automatically have the midi sounds substituted with real sounds? Ort, would I have to create a song from scratch using Real Band?
Thanks for your help
Cal

I know that others will fill in with much greater detail, but I wanted to give you a quick answer.
First, don't think of it as "switching" to RealBand; you will always find reasons to use both. (And if you get the ULTRAPak, you get the most current version of both programs together.) Note that if you have Real Tracks, you can use them in BIAB, too. You can still create a new piece in BIAB and port it over to RB for embellishment.
Basically you open a BIAB file in RB. (There was a bug in which Real Tracks didn't port from BIAB to RB but I think that has been fixed.) Or you can port a MIDI file type (.MGU, .SGU, etc.) from BIAB and assign Real Tracks in RB; see Help for specifics. You can also create songs within RB just as you would in BIAB, but they are static, meaning they don't shuffle variations the way BIAB does. This is the fundamental difference between BIAB and any sequencer. What having RB (or any sequencer) does for you is give you additonal tracks; in RB's case, up to 48.
I hope this answers your basic question. Actually doing it is going to blow your mind as the potential of using the two programs together dawns on you.
R.

If you import a song into RB is will not automatically build real tracks, but will open the BiaB song on the first 8 tracks and allow you to run them thru what ever synth or sampler you have setup in RB. I use TTS from Roland and it sound very good. If your biab file has Real tracks or Real Drums you can import them as well. From that point you can add more real tracks, add more midi, or record live instruments and mix the three together.
You can build a song from scratch in RB, much the same as in BiaB. I still find BiaB quicker on the front end moist of the time, and a tad more acurate on some things.
I use RB live as i build most songs from .kar files and it handles those like a charm.
HP Win 11 12 gig ram, Mac mini Sonoma with 16 gig of ram, BiaB 2025, Realband, Reaper 7, Harrison Mixbus 9 32c , Melodyne 5 editor, Presonus Audiobox 1818VSL, Presonus control app.

Thank-you for your insights. Much appreciated!
Ritght now, i use BB to create the song and then I render to wav files. I think use Audition to add tracks live, or tweak tracks or add effects to them. This works well for me, so I will keep Real Band in mind, but perhaps won't switch to it just yet.
Thanks again for helping me to understand the distinctions.

The BIAB song is not static in REAL BAND as long as you leave the first 8 tracks as BIAB tracks. Unlike BIAB were every time you hit play it regenerates you have to hit regenerate in RB for a new version of the song.

Hi Cal
Just one more thing, you can only swop the backing tracks with a real track the melody would have to be played by a synth or you can play the melody with a real instrument yourself
regards Dave Hoskins
I always play the right notes but not always in the right order

Hi Cal, I use BiaB since BiaB 9 fore Windows ore so on..... I needed BiaB to build MIDI´s and playbacks with nouts for my band. But nouw with RB I can proform the playbacks better than as before. My way is nouw that MIDI is at nouts fore my musishens and the RealTracks by RB whith out MIDI´s than the playbacks. If you whont I´ll can sent you one exemble in BiaB and an outher in RB sequenc. My musicers are playing old instruments espeshely coled in German " diatonische Handharmonika" ther get no new nouts too bay in Germany. But I can whreiting ther whith an outher special softwaere from Rubisoft! I have build the older playbacks whith Steinberg SE Studiocase I+II, whith in NI Komplete 5! Since RB I cans use it in RB NI with BiaB, I´ve vorget my MIDI is Bandstand from NI! So long, please exquese my bad English it wos a long time aggo that I´ve whritten that! Sorry Matze

The other thing to consider is what are you doing. My friend plays jazz guitar professionally 3 to 4 nights a week. His backing band is Bass, Piano & Drums. He does this all in Biab with Real Tracks. There would be nothing gained for him to go to Real Band.

Sorry but I think that problem is like the selb. My musicers playing the notes which build by me. When we play at stage is ther a playback whithout theyr voices, exclusive the RealTracks from my mining that wos great sound. So far, ok we plaied for 3 tims eash year not 3 ore 4 tims a week. But if we must able to plaied 4 times a week, their no more changed the system of anything, I think it is better to play on stage whith RB their its faster as BiaB! As I plaied alone 10 years aggo I had have BiaB their wos a big problem at stage whith it, long time to generate the song it wos more than 3 minits betwin the tracks. So I must ues Steinberg ore Logig tu hav the MIDI´S in a faster system whithout the break bitwin the songs. And now it RB heer the sequencer whith BiaB inkluded, nice featsher and brend new ways to go whith MIDI and VSTI´S on steage werry good program to realising own creativ songs to intrprating! So long Matze

Ok he play 3 to 4 times professionally guitar each week. His backing are 3 instruments Bass Piano and Drums, I think he´s playing leadguitar and sologuitar. The point of difference he play allone and BiaB is his band (the band in a box). I think he does freez the song by biab. Is this right? If he doesn´t made it, wher the time to able to regeneraded the song to long betwien the Tracks zu play a konzert ore so on.
This isn´t so by RB. OK by my backings ther are manny more RealTracks in, for exemble two Bass, two Drummer, two Perccussion, most of it one B3, two Guitars (most rhythem), one Solo Guitar, two Pianos (one for rhythem & one for Solo), the harmonika is also most of time in Backing, las but no least the Stings and Bras from NI most Violin, Viola & Cello, Trompet muted Trompet ensembel whith sustain Tombon the selb, the Strings most Tremolo and full instuments whith in Solo and ensembles whith sustain,
OK my old pc wos the via c7 an industry board thre wos to smole for stage, now I have an i7 64 bit whith XP 64 Pro and 12 GB ram, you can see 12 Realtracks and two MIDITracks to generate that are 14 tracks its to mutsh for BiaB, by RB isn´t it so!
Sorry for my complicated posting, but I´ll able to make it better.
So long Matze

No the songs are not frozen because with 2010 there is a fast loading feature. 4 RTs & RB load in 6 seconds with my computer. The reason for sticking with BIAB IS the randomness each generation.

Band-in-a-Box 2026 Video: AI Stems & Notes - split polyphonic audio into instruments and transcribe
This video demonstrates how to use the new AI-Notes feature together with the AI-Stems splitter, allowing you to select an audio file and have it separated into individual stems while transcribing each one to its own MIDI track. AI-Notes converts polyphonic audio—either full mixes or individual instruments—into MIDI that you can view in notation or play back instantly.
