This may help you about what John said: you said all your MIDI is on one track. In BIAB, you can use the green SEQ (sequencer) button to sort those out, and then use edit or copy to get what you need for melody and hits etc.

Also, if you open a MIDI file in RealBand, the free utility bundled with BIAB, it is my understanding that the MIDI tracks will separate.
